asterix Posted March 18, 2011 Posted March 18, 2011 There's no point discussing how Chawla bowls in a topic related to Ashwin. Hence this new topic. I don't know if I'm competent enough to discuss his bowling or not as I've not played at higher levels of cricket in India. I've played as an Off Spinner at Dristict level in Madhya Pradesh. I know bit of spin bowling. In those days we had to play on Matting wickets and it used to take a lot to spin the ball on matting wickets. Coming back to Chawla. Having seen his bowling and his palm and fingers on TV and photos, I feel that he will not be a great turner of the ball. His stock/wicket taking delivery will be the 'wrong one'/Googly/Straight one. Given his short stature, body structure, he tends to drag the ball short in order to impart the requisite spin on the ball. If he tries to flight the ball, he will not be able to give it a good 'rip' owing to his plump palm and fingers. You will ask whether he is a 'finger spinner' or a 'wrist spinner'? I say he is both. When he bowls conventional leg spin he uses his thick fingers to impart spin. For the wrong ones and googly he uses his wrist. There's definite room for improvement because his bowling runup induces him to bowl occasional 'no-balls' and half-trackers. He will bowl well in skiddy conditions (second innings in the evening) rather than dry conditions in the day. I'll add more with videos etc. I don't see him becoming a viable spin option for India unless he works hard in various aspects of his bowling and fitness. Chubby bowlers could survive as an 'off spinner' but to become a 'leg spinner' it takes a lot as your fingers, wrist, bowling action should be very flexible and should be able to grip the ball properly to impart the spin. I know bit of all sorts of spinbowling as I can bowl off spin, leg spin, left arm orthodox and chinaman. I've tried everything out when I used to practice hours together. You don't need to be a Tendulkar to see the talent in a player. Anyone who has watched cricket can tell Chawla is not an answer to India's bowling woes. The guy has no control and can't pitch 2 deliveries at the same spot. Without control a spinner is free runs to the opposing team.

Taking nothing away, those 4 wickets are those of bowlers. Looks like somebody else had killed the contest even before he started picking his first wicket.

Still those deliveries don't appear to be magic wicket taking deliveries. Bunch of ridiculous shots in quest of a huge total of 331. Leg spinners usually have this wobble in the air when they toss it up. I don't see in his bowling. I am talking about classical leg spinners not unique leg spinners like Kumble. In this video you can see how McGill let it wobble it in the air. 2nd wicket and 3rd wicket you can see. Chawla has a low trajectory may be due to his height. He has a seriously poor flipper. Chawla's fingers are :headshake: for flipping the ball..

Well I can't blame him since the other senior player in the team does the same. By same I mean bowling quick and not giving any air. Both of them fear being hit for sixes. This is where they lose the mental battle against the batsmen.
