Asoka, thats a very informative post you had there. :two_thumbs_up: Actually, the way to gauge 'greatness' is simple. How much impact has the person has on his field and on the society in general. Where Sachin and Anand excel is that in their respective fields they're unrivaled to a very large extent. They are also an inspiration to the coming generations. But what impact does a Sachin Tendulkar or Anand have on Indian society as a whole? Not a lot, and it diminishes after their careers. Thats why I'm not too comfortable putting a sports person as the greatest living Indian.

Cricket & Bollywood, for the common man are entertainment. That is the common denomination. Real or fiction or fixed doesn't matter. At the end of the day, cricket is also 'just a timepass for the usual bored public of India who have nothing better to watch/do'. And as a cultural ambassador for brand India, Bollywood in general and Amitabh Bachchan in particular have done wonders. More so than cricket has ever achieved or will achieve. We are talking about creating an awareness in different parts of the world about this wonderful country and culture called India in such a way that it is liked by commoners everywhere. Not saying that Bollywood has done a perfect job, but they've definitely done their bit. Why does cricket 'actually matter' and movies don't?
Ahh Thanks for confirming my thoughts about you being an extremely "filmy" person who thinks that these stupid Actors/Actresss are some National Icons , Now i realize how in our country do people like Saif Ali and Akshay Kumar manage to get awarded with Padma Shree . Coming over to the point of Bollywood and Cricket , I am not being specific about cricket but sports in general and the effort any normal Sportsperson puts in to reach the pinnacle in his field compared to so called Bollywood Stars who are mostly Sons/Daughters/Grandsons/Granddaughters/ Bhatijas/Bhanjas of some Superstar of yesteryears. Most of our National Sportpersons have crossed all barriers from poverty to competition , worked there asses for hours right from an early age to achieve what they have today . Global stars like Messi and Maradona have risen from levels of extreme poverty , did menial jobs for survival and to support there training , fought against all odds to become Global icons and not just stars in there own country ( Unlike Bollywood stars who are alien to most of world except Jahils in the subcontinent and there disapora worldwide) . These are the people who actually inspire a generation and society by rising from lowest position unlike the ones who are born with a golden spoon in there mouth and only need a small influence to become stars of a Third Grade Film industry . With a little influence , Even you can easily become someone like Kareena, Sonam , Katrina but never a Mary Kom , PT usha , Saina because the latter takes exceptional talent coupled with hard work to overcome competition unlike the former where nowadays everything comes at drop of a hat . There are plenty of other actors like Rajndikanth , Mamooty who are more popular in there states of origin than these Bollywood cheapstars , first we shall see them managing a stronger and equal following among all Indian states before making National Icons or Greatest Indians among them.

Anand was India's first GM. Today we have 24 GMs and a hot contender for Women's WC. All of them say their inspiration is Anand. Anand still helps most of them before they enter any tournament. He personally calls them and gives them advice. And please dont make me mad by taking the names of Bhutia,Paes, etc in the same sentence as Anand. Bhutia is a 3rd division English club reject,Paes isnt among the top 1000 players of all time. Anand is an all time great in his field. Among sportsmen, only SRT can be compared to him.
Bhutia has been the best Indian footballer for the last 12-15 years and has has played a very very influential part in whatever little improvement we've seen in Indian football in the last few years. Paes is an Olympic Bronze medallist and was ranked 73 in World Singles ranking and has been ranked No1 in Doubles rankings for a long time and has won more than 10 Doubles Grand Slam titles and had he concentrated on Singles instead of Doubles then he would surely have had been in the top 10 in the ranking - many players like Pete Samprass, Carlos Moya etc have said this. He has been India's most successful Davis Cup player ever.

Bhutia- good but not good enough to be bracketed with Sachin/Anand Paes- Srry mate but he would never have entered the top 30 in singles however hard he may have tried. I have been following tennis for the past 10 years and have never heard Pete/Moya say that. Even Ramanathan Krishnan and Amritraj were much much better than him.

[/quote'] What are you on about? You are giving me way too much importance here. I don't decide who gets the Padma Shree and who doesn't. At least not yet. Your late 'realization' is wrong. Your comments about me being 'filmy' and what not are out of line and not relevant. And even if I am 'filmy' it doesn't make me any lesser a person than you or anyone else. Also, let me say what I think. You don't have to say it for me. I never generalized on actors. I mentioned one actor (Amitabh) and I gave you reasons. Also, I believe Amitabh's is also a rags to riches story. I believe he has done lots for Indian society. Surely as much as Sachin has.

:icflove: But going by your argument even a person like Kalam cant be considered a candidate for this title. Kalam has done a great deal in the development of our nuclear/missile/space programmes. He was an awesome Prez. But how much is his impact index? What percentage of Indian society has changed for the better because of him. I believe that most of the Indians arent mature enough to understand him/his messages.Isn't Kalam's fault.

IIRC Paes won the Junior Wimbledon and US Open in 1990 (or maybe 1991) and was the World's no1 Junior player - so there's no reason why, if he had concentrated on singles instead of doubles, he would'nt have made it to top 10.

Meh, it all depends on one's taste, and how one derives inspiration for their own lives. For every SRT fan here on ICF who swears that every perfectly executed square drive gives them inspiration to excel in their own little world, there was probably a small towner in 70s and 80s who thought Amitabh Bachchan was the GOD they needed in their lives. Many others would think you can't do better than a Nobel prize and hence big up maybe a Amartya sen or a Venky Ramakrishnan. My nani claims Sri Sri ravishankar is the greatest Indian, what can I tell her :dontknow: about Amartya sen that will convince her otherwise

Maradona is not Indian. And your other point about global icons' date=' I think our bolly stars [b']are global icons in the true sense of the word. And not just among the diaspora and in the sub continent, but even among countries in the middle east and ex soviet bloc. And rising from poverty is not the only criteria for greatness. Mahatma Gandhi didn't rise from poverty. Does that make him any less a mahatma? Even me? :whack: What the hell. Katrina and Kareena are marginally better looking than me, but I can dance waaaaaaay better and have much better Hindi diction and acting skills. Sonam is 2 levels below me on all counts. Like I said before, Cricket ( or sport) is also entertainment at the end of the day. Just because its real, its importance in the larger scheme of things doesn't get elevated.
I suggest you stay out if sports related topic in general. You have no idea what influence cricekt has in the life of any Indian in general including a common rickshaw walla and its 100 times whatever impact bollywood can have. Stick with what your strength is(movies) and comment on sports only as much as you know as for the impact of Sachin as compared to any bollyowood actor, its too laughable to even be debated

Why not? The weapons and missiles that Dr Kalam fathered will play a big role in the defense of our country. It will impact the lives and futures of generations to come, in peace and war. So will the decrees passed when he was the President.

I am certain cricket has NO influence on atleast 50% of the Indian population. That is, the women. There goes your argument. yeah I know fineleg and co will protest and burn their bras, but you get the point.

So why don't you further elucidate your point? What impact does cricket have on the life of any Indian in general ( I am also one, btw)? I'm not saying it doesn't, just asking you for your answer. What impact did it have on yours? Movies have no impact on the life of a rickshawaala? If you can convince me with an answer, I'll take the cue and stay out of the sports related arguements. :icflove: Its too late anyways, I don't think arguing the importance of cricket is worth wasting sleep over. Good night people. You better stay up and answer though. :P

so what more does something (a particular sport for example) have to be (other than being real, that is) to be considered as "elevated" ??
