Our public icons include Sportsmen, Bollywood stars, politicians, industrialists and scientists. Out of these, IMO only sportsmen and scientists can come up for contest for the title.

Are they the ones who decide what are the norms of standard behavior? On topic, I feel in current living Indians, it could very well be Sachin. But it depends on perspective as well.

I am almost pissed off after seeing the thread and I thought greatest ever Indian of all time which Sachin is not for sure. But he is the greatest and most loved Indian sportsman ever for sure. Amongst LIVING India' date=' I think he is one of the greatest though people like Kalam, our top scientists, the shaheeds in our army and even MMS over Sachin in terms of top Indian. [b']MMS is ridiculed by many but very few know about his contributions towards the "new powerful India". We were nearly bankrupt nation less than 2 decades ago and MMS was made the Finance Minister when he took many decisions which brought a turnaround in India's finances and made us the power that the world respects now. FYI ManMohan Singh did not do everything he is credited with. He was merely the Finance Minister who brought out the budget that had all the Liberalization agenda - there were 100s of people (Civil service officers, the Prime Minister, many members of the Cabinet, business leaders, leading economists of the country etc to name a few) who were involved in developing the Liberalization policy that brought about such sweeping changes in the Indian economy. ManMohan Singh was the Finance Minister at that time so he did have a greater role BUT people tend to think it was ONLY he who had brought about all those changes - it is completely wrong. As for his contributions as the Prime Minister, well, the less said the better!!! ManMohan Singh would'nt hold a candle in front of some of our living Politicians in terms of contributions to our country - people like AB Vajpayee, Pranab Mukherjee etc have contributed much much more as politicians than MMS.

He is a sportsman; there are other professions and actions that are far greater and more meaningful. Incould easily argue that my aunt in india who runs a facility for orphaned children for no cause other than to help is a greater person.

Sachin to me is one of the greatest sportsmen we've ever had, but not our greatest (living) Indian. I agree with many of Asoka's posts in this thread. We've had many great sportspeople in our country, but the popularity of cricket just completely overshadows most of the achievements of other sportspeople in our nation. Honestly speaking though, This thread doesn't make sense to me... I think the mantle of 'greatest Indian' would actually have to span across all arenas like sport, science, technology, education, etc etc.

One may accuse him of being tolerant to corruption within the UPA govt but you simply need to look at India's economic growth since 2004. Look up what the condition of our economy was until the reforms were introduced in 1991 under the Narsimha Rao govt. That & the green revolution are certainly our turning points since independence. Given the large number of scandals breaking out, it is easy to lose perspective. You're talking about an Oxford educated PhD who could have been a multi millionaire in the west instead chose to fight it out in the gutter of Indian politics. He's bloody 78 yrs old, do we even comprehend the doggedness it takes to run the country with hopeless fellow party members, allies that are corrupt beyond measure and an opposition that will oppose major energy deals just for the heck of it ? Delivering an 8+ % growth rate is a very good achievement that impacts every Indian far more than SRT or Amitabh could dream of.
