ganeshran Posted March 31, 2011 Posted March 31, 2011 ganeshran I gave two examples from this world cup where MOTM was given to a player from the losing side. Both players were from minnow teams who performed exceptionally well against an opposition that was a class apart. Otherwise, very few MoM awards are given to players from the losing side in recent years. India and Pakistan was never going to be a one sided encounter, Hence the MoM should have been given to a player who made the difference between defeat and victory. If the match was tied, Riaz would have got the MoM (just like Strauss did the other night)
Raghav_12 Posted March 31, 2011 Posted March 31, 2011 One else got more then two wickets and four out of five were proper batsmen.None of them were fluky caught on the boundary wickets. That was the best bowling performance of this world cup. I said that Wahab could have been a decent choice as well. But as trend goes, MOTM goes to winning team most of the time even if performance is second best in the match. India - SA match, Steyn got some cheap wickets and was given MOTM ahead of master class innings from Sachin. So chill, it's not that big an issue.
Utalk Posted March 31, 2011 Author Posted March 31, 2011 5fer by styen and 111 by sachin were equally good performances but yesterday they were not even close.Sehwags 38(25) was the best Indian performance in the context.
Homerus_Unus Posted March 31, 2011 Posted March 31, 2011 I am not insulting no one simply pointing out a blunder.Yes I did go overboard in the OP hence its edited. I didn't say you were insulting as much as indicating how juvenile your (currently edited) rant was. Do you even comprehend that a MoM award is pittance compared to a trip to the finals? I don't think even Riaz is moping over it as much as the Pak-faithful are.

Just an observation obviously when you win you dont think about these things.

No they were not. Steyn picked some cheap wickets of lower order and when batsmen tried to go hammer and tongs in powerplay overs. If Steyn was good on that day, score wouldn't have been 260/1 by around 40 overs.
Utalk Posted March 31, 2011 Author Posted March 31, 2011 3 of the 5 wickets were of tailenders. Yaar he took gambhir and pathan in the same over to change the game.
vvvslaxman Posted March 31, 2011 Posted March 31, 2011 They could have shared. But from an indian perspective Viru and Raina were crucial too. Simon hughes went one step ahead and said Raina should have been given. From an individual perspective Wahab was the best. Probably for sentimental reasons Tendulkar picked up the MOM award.
Ram Posted March 31, 2011 Posted March 31, 2011 I suppose you cannot disagree with that. If you had to pick one standout player from y’day’s game, it was Wahab. But then again, the adjudicators for the award, i.e, the commentators, generally like to award it to the winning team, because its important that you seem consistent with the prevailing public mood at that time - India/Pakistan historic world cup encounter, india wins a closely fought game to go through to the semis.. Sachin is MoM – this has a good ring to it. I am pretty sure if an Indian bowler had taken 5 wickets and a Pakistani batsmen scored 85 runs with 5 dropped catches and Pakistan won, they would have awarded it to the Pakistani. This sort of thing happens in the NBA all the time. In a team like Lakers, some of the time, most of the crucial plays will come from other players, but at the end of the victory, it is always Kobe Bryant’s picture that is flashed in the headlines. You have to play by the script, keep bigging up your heroes, even though they may not have done anything heroic. It’s a often used marketing tool.

He was the one who set up that score for India. He negated our best bowler and threw us off our game and it took us 20 overs to recover and by that time you were 120/1.
satyam1729 Posted March 31, 2011 Posted March 31, 2011 Yaar he took gambhir and pathan in the same over to change the game. Nehra changed the game by that pathetic last over. 8 out of 10 times a bowling side will defend 13 in last over.

You guys were 267/1 in 39 and looked set for 340 min.Dont blame nehra please he would have defended 43 in last over without any problems.

I agree purely on cricketing performance basis Wahab deserved MOM but in context of match and Winning side it was given to Sachin. Who may not have played great innings in cricketing sense but those 85 runs made the difference. In final analysis it was Team India that won, as all XI players made contribution to this win.
Sachin=GOD Posted March 31, 2011 Posted March 31, 2011 You guys were 267/1 in 39 and looked set for 340 min.Dont blame nehra please he would have defended 43 in last over without any problems. of course he could have defended 43......................but in that match he had to defend 13 :D
Utalk Posted March 31, 2011 Author Posted March 31, 2011 of course he could have defended 43......................but in that match he had to defend 13 :D We all laugh at him but nehra is a smashing fella and bowled well yesteday.
yoda Posted March 31, 2011 Posted March 31, 2011 He would have won the MOM if NO ONE from the winning side had a standout performance. You need to leave those dropped catches aside cause that goes with the territory of the opposition we were playing. Now looking at the absolute numbers it was 5 wickets (standout in a losing cause) vs 85 runs (standout in a winning cause). In this case winning cause trumps because there was a standout performance from the winning side as well.
