Ireland captain William Porterfield has described the ICC's decision to trim the next World Cup to just the ten countries as "an absolute joke". The ICC, in its executive board meeting in Mumbai on Monday, decided to restrict the 2015 World Cup to its 10 full-member nations, thereby denying Associate countries like Ireland and Netherlands the chance to qualify on the basis of their position in the ICC one-day rankings or by a qualification tournament. "It's an absolute disgrace," Porterfield said, "and I don't know how they can even comprehend doing this. We have done everything they asked of us over the last few years in terms of restructuring Irish cricket and I can't come to terms with how they can just shut us out, do away with the qualification period and then try and call this a World Cup." Monday's decision means that that the Associates and Affiliates have been effectively shunted out of cricket's showpiece event for the next eight years. Ireland are currently ranked No. 10 in the ICC ODI rankings, and though they finished sixth in Group B in the World Cup, they beat England in Bangalore, to add to their win over Pakistan in their World Cup debut in 2007 and have been one of the consistently stronger Associate countries. "We are currently ranked 10th, ahead of Zimbabwe, and there is no reason we can't move up another position, if not two, by the next World Cup," Porterfield said. "Instead, the door has been closed in our face. It is an embarrassment. "I don't know what else we had to do in the World Cup, we held our own against the full members, we beat England, we got the fastest ever hundred. For them to turn around and throw that back in our face a few weeks later is an absolute joke." Porterfield said the decision to expand the Twenty20 World Cup to 16 teams was adequate compensation and warned that the development of the game in the non-Test playing nations could get severely affected. "They say it's a compensation [to expand the Twenty20 World Cup to 16 teams] but I can't agree with that because it is every player's dream to play at and win a World Cup," he said. "Everyone in the cricketing world can see they are shutting the door on not only a lot of players, but also on the development of world cricket. "It's not just about Ireland. This could mean the death of cricket in a lot of countries … and all because a few full members are looking to make a few extra quid from the competitions. How they can turn around, shut out half the world and still call themselves a world governing body is an absolute joke. "It is every full member's duty to look after world cricket. Now the whole integrity of the World Cup has been brought into question because this is not a World Cup, it's a glorified Champions Trophy."

^ very well said ... lol there is one thing that bothers me about this. Lets say (and that is a big if) by 2015 ireland climbs up to say 8th or 7th position in the icc ranking on top of ZIM or BD. Are they still not going to let IRE play? I find this ridicilous .... They are already beyond ZIM in ranking so WTF did they do wrong? Not going to happen. Ireland can go upto 7th...but for that to happen...Ireland needs to play established sides more regularly. ICC will make sure that Ireland dont get to play more then 1 such ODI in a year. There...problem solved. By the tiime 2015 comes...Ireland ranking automatically will fall below Zim. ICC did this so that they can sell the TV rights with guarantee big games. What I dont understand that WI, NZ...but more importantly...Zim & BD do not in any way qualify as big games. Ireland compete much better. Probably they are not invited...because ICC fear that in 2015....Ireland might make the SF....& ICC & its TV partners ESPN dont want that.

Yes ....do u dont know how ICC work. They do what BCCI, ECB & CA tell them to do. The other 7 test playing countries looks up to these 3 boards & say..."Yes Masters". Associate countries are ICC members only in name. They dont even have voting rights on important matters.

Maybe thats the reason...Dockrell..& I heard a few months back...they were also looking for Ire opener Sterling...plus a fast bowler the name I dont remember. Maybe ECB said to ICC...look...if Ire continue playing...then we cant guarantee that Eng can be a good team in 2015 WC....so we need Ire out to get those players in our team & make it more compititive. They must have use the example of Morgan...& told..look..without Morgan..we might not have made the QF of this WC itself. ICC offcourse wants more money...so they agreed..& no Ire for 2015.

If they have Ireland then in the long run it can be very beneficial for the ICC because Eng-Ire rivalry will also develop in cricket and it will only result i more money for the ICC if these 2 are engaged in a tough competition.

Its really a shameful act by the ICC. I feel bad for Ireland. A Team that has beaten South Africa and England in their 2 world cup campaigns needs to be there in the world cup. They were competitive in almost all of their matches. Ireland deserves to be there. Shame on you ICC.

Hmm...I say, why not we follow Football WC format where only host team gets automatic chance to play and rest of the teams have to play qualifier. I say, except Host team, all teams including associates have to qualify for rest 9 team slot. That would give everyone a fair chance. :)

they beat Pak in 2007 and then for the next 4 years I think they did'nt get to play even a single match against the top teams in World cricket (or maybe they might have played a few matches) and then they came to the 2011 WC and defeated England and performed very well. That means there is surely talent in the country - if they can produce players like Eoin Morgan, Ed Joyce, Dockerell then there is talent, so ICC should encourage them...........but what the ICC has done is to shut the door in their face.

Something needs to be done about this. Otherwise Irish cricket is going to have a major setback in their development. NFL is hosting matches in England and gaining popularity whereas cricket is only dying. Nobody gives a crap about cricket there anymore other than Ashes. Rise of Ireland in cricket can help England too. But looks like they'd rather smuggle in more Irish players. ICC is being way too money hungry for cricket's own good. What has been done for Afghanistan's ODI development? Nothing. No tours, no triangular series or anything. Same for Ireland. Pak will play a pity 2-ODI match against them and I hope the pak's get raped by the Irish but this is just plain ridiculous. WC 2015 already sucks.

The move to trim the 2015 World Cup to ten teams - made up entirely of the full member nations of the ICC - is a severe blow for Ireland who have grown as a cricket nation over the past five years. Ireland are not the only casualties from the fall out of the World Cup with Kumar Sangakarra resigning as Sri Lanka’s one-day captain. That's really sad. I dont particularly care for other teams but Ireland showed they had a lot of fight and talent and they deserve to at least have a shot at qualifying for the next WC. How about having a competition just among the associate nations and the winner being included as the 11th team ?

This decision has nothing to do with any of the boards at all. BCCI doesn't care about the Asian bloc anymore and it hasn't since ACB,SACB and BCCI jointly conducted the Champions league. The only opposition for BCCI is an stubborn ECB who thinks that it is entitled to be the boss because its "their" game. This stubbornness should end soon with the end of Giles clark and when more counties do not turn a profit. SA and WI supports BCCI thus making any other grouping meaningless. CA or ECB themselves have no real threat from Ireland either, be it Ireland knocking them out of WC or getting better test players than England. The only reason is ICC greed. India playing a minimum of 6 games is not enough for ICC. They want India to play 9 games. If they add another 2 teams, then the number of games that India plays will come down because they will be forced to group the teams. A look at recent direction the ICC has gone clearly indicates this. 1. Banning 4 or more country tournaments so that WC and Champions trophy are the only such tournaments. 2. T20, Champions trophy and WC. Almost one ICC tournament each year. 3. Champions trophy, which started as a short tournament to popularize in associate countries, quietly became longer and played in SL,England etc. 4.More ICC tournaments with One day league and Test championship. I wont be surprised if we learn the ICC somehow tried to take over IPL and Champions league too. They want to have a share from all big tournaments.
