One memorable moment from each World Cup

Now that the dust is settling on the 2011 WC and the euphoria has ebbed, I got nostalgic about past world cups and things I remember. Being old, I have had the "privilege" of watching more WCs than all you young 'uns, and when I let my aging mind wander, I came up with these: 1975 - I was 5 yrs old, don't remember a thing :-). 1979 - Sunny Gavaskar's "defiant" 36 off 500 or so balls: not exactly a "moment," but with no TV in those days, I don't remember anything else. Somehow, some people took pride in the fact that he carried the bat. ODI cricket was an alien concept. These were the days when batsmen were regarded for the time they spent at the crease, not their strike rates!! 1983 - We had just got TVs. Black and White. I clearly remember Krish Srikkanth's blistering square drive off Andy Roberts. 1987 - Ya know ... at age 17, adrenaline was being replaced by testosterone, which can be bad for your memory. I really don't remember a damn thing. 1992 - Testosterone was still flowing. Don't remember a damn thing. 1996 - Sohail - Prasad. I was in the US already; Jai-bhai was charging us $10 per match to sit in a dingy motel room and watch the 20" CRT screen. But, man .... with that one moment, the adrenaline was back!! 1999 - Met my current wife that year ... not sure what else was happening around me. 2003 - SRT's uppercut for a six. Udaanaada sambo .... udaanaada sambo. 2007 - Really nothing to remember. 2011 - The one moment that will stand out for me is what I dub the "Trance moment." When Dhoni hits the last one ... the distant, zoned-out look in his eyes following the shot ... and topping it off with a "de ghumake" move of the bat. The mother of all memories!

Don't really have much recollection till the 92 world cup so will provide my list from highlights I have seen till 92 and from 96 will list the incidents that stood out for me... 1975, 1979 - Haven't even seen a higlight of these tourneys 1983 - Kapil's catch, Sandhu's inswinger to bowl Greenidge, Amarnath's LBW against Holding to win the match and Kapil hoisting the trophy 1987 - Haven't seen any highlight that stands out 1992 - Would go with Miandad jumping around like a monkey and India beating Pakistan For the following tourneys I don't have to fall back on highlights... 1996 - Jadeja taking apart Waqar - simply amazing to watch!, Prasad clean bowling Sohail and India winning the match 1999 - Not too many fond memories of this one. The two closest ones were Ganguly & Dravid's partnership against SL and India beating Pakistan 2003 - Tendulkar taking apart Shoaib. Can't get enough of it and can watch those highlights forever. Especially sweet after Akhtar made a lot of bold statements before the game regarding what he intends to do to Tendulkar and other Indian batsmen :cantstop: 2007 - No highlights there at all 2011 - Sehwag's first ball 4s, India beating Aus, Pak & SL in knockouts, Dhoni's 6 to win the final and Indian team celebrating with the cup :yay:

1987 - Gavaskar's brutal batting against NZ with a fever running 102 degrees. India had to score in certain number of overs to finish the top of the table and in the process avoiding Pakistan. In hindsight India might as well have faced Pakistan in semis :cantstop:

1999 - RSA vs Australia tie with Lance Klusener and Allan Donald got sucked into their thoughts and were not exactly communicating. This helped Australia clinch the semifinal spot and then go on to win the world cup.

1983 - no memories. I was small kid. 1987 - Chetan Sharma's hat-trick, Gavaskar's first ODI century. 1992 - Sachin's first knock as an ODI opener. Miandad's monkey act. Playing book cricket in the school while anxiously waiting to watch the news later in the day. Collecting players' pictures and scorecards from newspapers. 1996 - Venky vs Sohail. Electric atmosphere in our hostel common room. 4-5km long walk when Pakistan was pounding India. 1999 - cant seem to remember any specific big moment. Except several Klusener cameos. 2003 - All the tournament - I followed through online commentary only. So all I remember is Sachin vs Shoaib - whatever I could gather from online updates/commentary. 2007 - somehow I don't remember anything except getting pawned by Bangladesh. 2011 - Sehwag's first ball fours and Dhoni's six to end the tournament. Waking up next morning to find that the TV was still on.

I remember only from 1996 onwards: 1996 - Vinod Kambli crying. 1999 - Venkatesh Prasad's 5 wickets against Pak. 2003 - Goddy six off Akhtar. 2007 - minds draws a blank :D 2011 - everything about this World Cup is memorable :proud:

1975, 1979: I was not born, grainy footages shown on TV are the only memories 1983: Kapil's 175, his catch in the final to get Viv, and the players on the balcony 1987: ind losing to aus narrowly by 1 run 1992: Pak winning and 22 runs off 1 ball 1996: Jaya-Kalu. Aravinda DeSilva irritating me after we had them at 0/2. Kambli crying 1999: India beat England in a match played over 2 days. 2003: Punter kicking Zak's ass 2007: The dejected faces of Dravid, Sachin, Sehwag after our early exit 2011: Yuvraj slaying Australia and Dhoni taking us home

75,79-Nothing just heard stories like Gavaskar's innings,Richard's 100 etc etc. 83-Kapil Paaji holding the wc 87-Emergence of '6' Sidhu,Azhar taking 3 wickets against Aus,Chetan Sharma's hattrick-Gavaskar-Cheeka Partnership against NZL,Sunny's Last match in SF 92-Ind vs Pak-Miandad vs More,Sachin being Mom,Jadeja's catch against Aus,Kiran More almost winning the game against Aus from a hopeless situation. 96-Ind vs Pak again-Jadeja vs Waqar,Prasad vs Sohail,Miandad's last game where he was humbled,Eden burning(Saddest memory),WI collapse against Aus,BCL vs SA,Prabhakar bowling offspin against SL after receiving a beating of a lifetime from Jayasuriya-Kalu,Ken vs WI. 99-Dada-Wall blitz against SL,Ind vs Pak,Pak vs Bang,Akthar's delivery to Fleming,Sachin's innings against Kenya I think after losing his dad,Aus vs SA SF,Waugh vs SA (birth of the 'you have dropped the worldcup mate' legend),Gilchrist owning pak in the final. 2003-Ind vs Pak,Sachin vs Pak,SA choked by D/L,Kenya's fairytale,Symonds vs Pak,Bichel vs Eng,Nehra vs Eng and then throwing up.Final(Want to erase that from my memory) 2007-Dave loverlock's catch,Gilly v SL in the final,Pak vs Ire,Ind vs Bang(another erasable memory) 2011-Ind vs Aus,vs Pak and the emotional celebration and everything in between

For me one of the most enduring image of 92 WC, is Jadeja (Ajay one) taking a great catch of Border in deep. One of best outfield catches by an Indian. Jadeja was considered a very good prospect in those days as well :winky:

1996---Sachin 90 vs McGrath & Warne, Kenya win against WI,Astle opening the WC with a superb 100, WI vs Aus semifinal ( I still fecking hate that Damien fleming ! Semifinal specialist !) 1999---Ganguly & Dravid tearing apart lankan attack, Aus vs SA semifinal( Damien Fleming the villain again !) 2003---Sachin 98 vs Pak, enough said ! 2007---our batting performance against Bermuda lol, Malinga 4 in 4, Gibbs 6 in 6 2011--- Match against Aus , Yuvraj spanking Tait & then Lee when we needed 70+...this is the moment when I knew that this world cup is ours ! Ross Taylor 100 vs Pak, Sachin 100's...and ofcourse THAT SIXXXXXXXXXX...!!!

1983 world cup - Kapil dev and co beating the famous WI team 1996 Jadeja onslaught waqar got hammered in final overs 1999 world cup India beating Pakistan during the Kargil war my patriotism increased more and more. 2003 Sachin innings 98 best of the world cup against Pakistan. 2011 Beating Aus Pak Sl all were world champions of the past world cups.
