rkt.india Posted May 15, 2011 Posted May 15, 2011 Mishra and Vinay Kumar were picked based on the ODD performance. DD management should have picked Varun for earlier games, he would have been a certainty for the WI tour if he had bowled more in this IPL before the team selection. Yeah Mishra did well, but Vinay Kumar, anyone who knows cricket and have seen him bowling will say that he cannot be an international bowler.
saneindian Posted May 15, 2011 Posted May 15, 2011 Yeah Mishra did well' date=' but Vinay Kumar, anyone who knows cricket and have seen him bowling will say that he cannot be an international bowler.[/quote'] Look in one post you say Indian selectors don't consider ODD performances. I gave you two examples, now you say oh look at him , he can't be an international player. The guy has done well in first class and ODD cricket, why not give him a chance before making a judgement on him? If he was such a rubbish bowler, he would have failed even in the dead wickets of domestic cricket, isn't it?
msb1991 Posted May 15, 2011 Posted May 15, 2011 I liked his spell today. I would have picked him instead of Vinay in the team to WI. But I dont think even Vinay would get a chance and probably it will be Munaf and Praveen unless we go for a third seamer. Varun would struggle on slow West Indian tracks, imo. His single weapon is pace. If the pitch is slow, therefore, he'll be in some difficulty. If the pitch is slow, therefore, he'll be in some difficulty. tell me what weapon Vinay kumar has. he has variations which are good for T20 only where batsmen try to hit in every over. ODIs are not like that. he does not have anything with which he can take wickets. he is not a good death bowler also. he is not along term option. if selectors picked a team without seniors what is the purpose behind that, it means to give chances to some one new who is promising and can serve in the future. SI gave example of he has done well in FC and ODD. Even jogi has a great record. domestic stats do not give the best idea of a player's ability. he did well in IPL because batsmen go after him and he gets that benefit.

King Tendulkar Posted May 15, 2011 Posted May 15, 2011 Vinay Kumar is rubbish. No way is international quality. Shocking selection
msb1991 Posted May 15, 2011 Posted May 15, 2011 Vinay Kumar is rubbish. No way is international quality. Shocking selection It is unlikely he'll get a game (ahead of Ishant, Praveen and Munaf), but if he takes wickets in zonal cricket and for Karnataka in 50 over cricket and he takes wickets in the IPL, surely he deserves a go in the squad.
express bowling Posted May 15, 2011 Posted May 15, 2011 Varun was really exciting today. He was beating batsmen by raw pace. On top of that he swung the ball both ways although not all the time. His accuracy at 140 to 149k is really commendable. The West Indian tour is almost like an A team tour and he could have been included. It would be difficult to take a newbie to England.
express bowling Posted May 15, 2011 Posted May 15, 2011 The problem with our choosen seam attack is that 3 out of 4 seamers are the slowest frontline pacers in India today. This makes the attack one dimensional. Ishant is a genuine quick but in case he is sick we have to play with a very gentle paced attack. That might be okay in T20 but not in ODIs. Zaheer, Sreeshant and Nehra are fast-medium. In the world cup we played with 3 fast-medium bowlers and one medium pacer, hence we did not face the problem of a very gentle paced attack as we may do in Windies if Lamboo is unable to play. The pace attack should have had more variety pace-wise.
Ultimate_Game Posted May 15, 2011 Posted May 15, 2011 He looked good today but I haven't seen him swing or seam the ball so far. He generally bowls short of length in early 140s which is good enough at IPL level but to succeed at the intl level he will need to swing the bowl or get seam movement. Nevertheless a good prospect for India By the way I am impressed by RP Singh and he seems to be getting back his old form - consistently bowled in high 130s and swung the ball. Would do well in Eng later this year if picked.
saneindian Posted May 16, 2011 Posted May 16, 2011 did he do well in vijay hazaare trophy? or devdhar trophy this year? i do not want him in the team because it makes a one dimensional attack. you need variety in the attack. Here's his performance in Vijay Hazare Trophy 4/35, 1/36, 0/58, 3/18, 0/6, 2/39, a total of 10 wickets in 6 matches @19 In the Deodhar Trophy, SZ was knocked out in the QF where Vinay had figures of 0/39. With some luck should have picked up 2-3 wickets in his spell, beat the bat numerous times, was nearly unplayable initially, but Mithun picked up the wickets from the other end. As for variety in the attack, well in that case selectors would have to pick a left armer as we already have a swing bowler in PK, seam bowler in Munaf and hit the deck bowler in Ishant. With Zak rested, which other option did we have? Can't see beyond RPS at the moment who is short of fitness needed for international cricket. Irfan though looking good is still some way off from top flight cricket. Wagh, Parameshwaran etc haven't done enough to even get into India A side. Had Nehra been fit, he would have been there instead of Vinay.

Swing is always a second option for pacer who can bowl fast and yes he can bowl away swingers. he has one of the better action conducive for swing bowling and up right seam position. you don't get a finished product from FC cricket generally. They hone their skills when they play for national teams. There are many examples who played test cricket without much FC cricket or great performance in FC cricket because of their potential only and then improved while playing. We are so impatient in case of our bowlers while batsmen get loads of chances to prove, bowlers are discarded very early. While we need to show patient in terms of bowler because they take more time to develop than batsmen in India specially.

Never go for stats...MItchell Johnson and Ryan Harris dont have as good an FC record as Jogi, but will you say Jogi is better than them.

Man you are contradicting yourself with every post. First you say selectors dont look at ODD performances, then when shown others have done well in ODD too and got into the team, you change your tune and say don't look at stats, we need variety. Your problem seems to be "any one less than 135 kmph" should not play for India. Why would that be? Varun is an exciting prospect, doesn't mean we rubbish other bowlers. We did pick Umesh Yadav for his sheer pace during the Zim tri series and saw how he faltered. Umesh went for India A tour as well, did not do much. Maybe we rushed him early into the international cricket and the selectors therefore are giving Varun the time to develop his skills a little more before handing him hi India cap. Varun, I said in another post, hasn't done enough yet to get into the team. However had he played a lot more in the IPL, he would have been into the team. No fault of his, but in a way what this gives him is a chance to work on his fitnessand skills and then show the selectors what they are missing by leaving out of the squad.

Because we already have so many and I have already told you, these bowlers cannot develop skills or get better if they will play FC cricket in India. Indian FC cricket is rubbish where bowlers like Jogi fails every other bowler. Our bowlers can only improve if they are with the team and can get a few games to bowl to international batsmen. Vinay does not have that capability or natural talent. He is a good hard working guy but he has his limits. He is not the one who will take the team further. I am not saying fast bowler less 135 cannot succeed. They can but they need different set of skills like Zak has or PK has, Vinay does not possess them. He is not tall either to get extra bounce like McGrath or Pollock. This selection committee has been very poor. Umesh didnt do well for 2-3 matches. He was out. They are acting like PCB In terms of bowling selections whether spinners or pacers. They are playing musical chair with them. if they select a bowler, they need to give him time and confidence. By going back to FC wont improve them that much. They can learn that only while with the national team or by playing international matches. If they need to groom any bowler they need have him with India setup. FC cricket is good to get stamina and lots of overs under the belt. Aaron does look to have good FC stats because he plays for Jharkhand, a plate team and fielding standards of these teams have been poor. They drop dozens of catches in very FC match. He has played 11 matches and took 25 wickets and suppose if he has minimum 2 drop catches every match on his bowling, he missed 22 wickets in those 11 matches. It means he could have had 25+22= 47 wickets in those 11 matches. These sort of drop catches do not happen in Elite teams. They have better fielding standards and better support bowlers. If Yadav or Aaron both could have played for teams like Mumbai, Tamilnadu, or Delhi, etc., their FC records could have looked much better. This is not just my assumption. This is a fact in our FC cricket. Many writers and FC players have mentioned about these things.

This is a fact in our FC cricket. Many writers and FC players have mentioned about these things. Umesh was picked for the Zim tri series, did not do anything then sent to the tour of Sri Lanka as an additional bowler, got picked for the Rest of India team , did not do anything, got picked for Indian Board President's 11, did not do much, picked in the challenger trophy teams, did not do much again, picked for SA tour, team management did not have enough faith in him to play him. Now thats 6 -7 months of consistent backing by the selectors. Wonder why you are blaming the selectors. About your theory of dropped catches and all that crap which IMO is absolutely asinine, well playing in plate wicket, shouldn't taking wickets be an easier task as you play against the likes of J&K, Tripura, Goa, Services etc? Even if for a moment , I do belive in your theory, do a similar maths for someone like Pankaj Singh, he would have picked 60-70 wickets in a season!! Why not get him ahead of everyone eelse then? Yadav has played for a better team in IPL, exactly how many wickets has that resulted in? To conclude- 1. Umesh Yadav has had his chances and the selector's backing too, hasn't grabbed them. Plus he hasn't shown enough development to suggest he's ready for the national duty yet. India A tours, some more domestic cricket etc will give us an exact idea how good he is. 2. Varun is still developing and needs to do more to be in the national side. However, had DD been prudent and played him in every IPL match from the start, he would have created the much needed buzz around himself to get picked for the WI tour. 3. Vinay Kumar's selection is a justified reward for the consistency he has shown in domestic cricket. Now wether he's an international class bowler can only be gauged after he's played some matchs. Let's not trash him just because he cannot bowl 140+.
