Sachinism Posted April 25, 2011 Posted April 25, 2011 The chief organiser of the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi has been arrested following an investigation into allegations of corruption. Suresh Kalmadi was removed from his post in January. Police say he will be charged with conspiracy regarding the awarding of commercial contracts for the Games - he denies any wrongdoing. The build-up to the Games, held in the capital in October, was marred by allegations of sleaze and incompetence. A spokesman for India's Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) said Mr Kalmadi was arrested "for conspiracy to cause favour to a company in Switzerland while procuring timers and scoring equipment for the Games". Other charges relate to contracts at a 2009 event in London which marked the start of a baton race across Commonwealth countries, say reports. Mr Kalmadi is expected to appear in court on Tuesday. If found guilty he could face years in prison. Money misappropriated In February, organising committee Secretary General Lalit Bhanot and another top official, VK Verma, were arrested and accused of financial irregularities linked to the Games. The Games cost several billion dollars to stage and were meant to do for India's image what the Olympics did for China, says the BBC's Mark Dummett in northern India. But instead the event was undermined by allegations of corruption and was so badly organised they became a national shame, says our correspondent, especially after photographs emerged showing the filthy state of the athletes' accommodation. The budget for the event ballooned to an estimated $6bn (£3.87bn) - with India's federal corruption commission receiving complaints alleging that up to $1.8bn (£1.08bn) of Games money was misappropriated. The row over the Games is one of a series of corruption scandals that has rocked India in recent months. Also on Monday, Kanimozhi - an MP and the daughter of a key ally in the coalition government - was charged with handling bribes. The allegations relate to the a multi-billion dollar scandal over the sale in 2008 of mobile phone licences for a fraction of their real value. India's former telecoms minister, Andimuthu Raja, has already been charged with conspiracy, forgery and fraud over the scandal. Another allegation which has angered the public centres on claims that houses intended for war widows were diverted to civil servants. Earlier this year, the head of the country's anti-corruption watchdog was forced by the Supreme Court to resign, on the grounds that he himself faced corruption charges. The scandals prompted Indian social activist Anna Hazare to go on a four-day-long hunger strike to push for stringent new anti-corruption laws. There were demonstrations across India in support of his call and the government eventally agreed to his demands. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-south-asia-13186190
achilles Posted April 26, 2011 Posted April 26, 2011 The power behind him and many others is still scot free
DomainK Posted April 26, 2011 Posted April 26, 2011 He has sucked blood for a long time. He went a bit overboard this time. This was more than he could chew. Yeah, tip of the iceberg, but I doubt we will ever get to see the rest of the iceberg.
Sachin=GOD Posted April 26, 2011 Posted April 26, 2011 The power behind him and many others is still scot free This. He will most likely go scot free :(( No, he won't go scot free because if he does then ultimately there will be more investigation and fingers will be pointed at the powers behind him - and that can't happen, can it!!! So Kalmadi has been made a pawn in this huge game of swindling money and he will rest in jail/CBI headquarters for quite some time now while those who made much more money than Kalmadi will be sitting and calling for the severest punishment for Kalmadi if he's found guilty :winky:
Sachin=GOD Posted April 26, 2011 Posted April 26, 2011 Kalmadi sacked from Indian Olympic Association. This brings an end to 15 years of disaster for Indian Olympic Sports. Meanwhile VK Malhotra has been named the acting president of IOA. He also is a Politician :wall: :wall:
Alchemist Posted April 27, 2011 Posted April 27, 2011 Had a chance to meet him 15 years ago. He seemed good then. Really did some stuff for sportsmen in Pune that time. (national games, encouraging small scale tournaments and all). He was a small fish then. Probably too much greed got him.

The argument in Mr. Kalmadi's favour is that though he may have been pushed into a corner in India, he continues to hold a firm grip over sports associations in the Asian continent - several nourished and nurtured by him. Mera Bharat Mahaan, Sau mein see 99 beimaan! :isalute:
Crookbond Posted July 1, 2013 Posted July 1, 2013 Suresh Kalmadi loses bid for Chief of Asian Athletics Association Pune: Suresh Kalmadi was dealt a massive blow as he lost the polls held for the post of President of the Asian Athletics Association (AAA) today. Incidentally, this was the only sports body post (AAA president) that Mr. Kalmadi held. Athletics associations from 45 countries decided the fate of Mr. Kalmadi who was pitted against the Senior Vice-President of the body and also President of the oil-rich Qatar Athletic Association, Brig. Dalham al-Hamad. The 69-year-old was re-contesting the elections to retain the post for the fourth consecutive term. He was first elected to the position in 2000 and was re-elected for a third time in 2009. The elections were held on his home turf - Pune. http://sports.ndtv.com/othersports/othersports/210088-suresh-kalmadi-loses-bid-for-chief-of-asian-athletics-association
