Regarding which is more difficult you just have to see the number of teams who have won the World Cup and the number of teams who have won a test series in SA and Australia.

India went toe to toe against a much tougher Australian team in 2003 and would have probably won that Sydney test, one where they amassed some 700 odd runs, hadn't that idiot Bucknor been smoking some grade A **** the night before. Bucknor found a good companion in that noob Parthiv Patel.
