However, the major problem in ISI is its lack of accountability to the government Long term Strategy should come from the government: A spy agency which decides its own long term strategy is a recipe for disaster. There is a potential conflict of interest here. In order to further its own need for survival, the agency will always look to increase conflict rather than decrease it.

They are efficient at building links with groups against their enemies. They have nurtured many terrorist groups. They have used American money to kill terrorists which are not friendly to them and used the same money to nurture the ones aligned with their strategic goals. ISI is however not good for the Pakistan's state, because there is no long term planing. They simply are doing a lot of stuff to harm India and the Northern Alliance, however they dont think through the long term implications of ganging up and giving support to groups that thrive on violence. Eventually these groups came and bit them in the back.

Bin Laden's case is similar to the classic Hindi movie villain who commits some crime in his youth, lives his life in luxury and comfortably, to be killed by the hero in old age. Successful? The guy spent his best years in luxury and doing what he wanted to be killed when he would have died of natural cause in a few years anyway.

Regarding the US getting him, it is about as huge as it gets. You only need to see the reaction of the people to see it's effect. It restores credibility back in the CIA, it closes the hunt, gives sense of satisfaction to the families of 9/11, sends a message to guys like Zawari and Mullah Omar that even the great Bin Laden wasn't safe from the US, so might as well give up. Even if he was 99 years old when they caught him, it would have been huge. Guys like Zakaria think AQ is finished with this operation. Although I wish it were true, I am pretty sure it puts a dent in future recruiting.

Another few years and who knows, he might have died of natural causes. However, since Laden was a brand in himself, his assassination will have significant effect on those who are inspired by him.

I am sorry, I don't consider 'retribution' and 'solace' for victims of 9/11 a success simply because in the event as many if not more innocent civilians were killed.

ISI is pretty toxic for all humans irrespective of nationality. But this conflict of interest is also very apparent in the relationship between the CIA and the US Govt until very recently. This govt. has a better hold in things but only slightly. Things were worst during the 60s-90s (basically the heights of the Cold War)

Bin laden has been served justice. I am sure actual victims of 9/11 would feel better he is dead then alive. Just wish we could serve justice on our dead countrymen
