I would replace Venkatesh Prasad with David Johnson and may S S Dighe with Deep Dasgupta and we have worst Indian XI for last 15 years.

I was checking his profile and found that he has played just one Test Match he is Right Arm Medium Fast. http://www.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/match/63565.html He bowled only in first inning took three wickets of Mark Waugh, Geoff Marsh and Mark Taylor but he didn't got chance of bowling in second inning don't know why and he never played for Indian test team also again.

I remember watching the highlights of that game on DD when I was a kid. We didnt have live telecast of overseas test matches in those days. If you look at the scorecard, he didnt bowl in the second innings. So obviously he must have been injured and then never made a comeback.

Deep Das Gupta was a more than decent batsman at test level...had scored century while opening and had played a decent knock in SA to save a test match...His keeping was worst though but he could have played solely as an opened on those days easily.

This was third test of india's 91-92 series, played at Sydney and India was already trailing by 2-0 having lost both the test matches without putting any fight worth mentioning. As spinners didn't do much to note in first two test matches, in an unprecedented move(??), India decided to play four seamers for this test match, though from these four, two - Banerjee and Srinath were absolute rookies. India's this move backfired very badly. India put up a very good batting display with Shastri putting up 206 and Sachin cantering to his second century of career (148). By the time, Australia came on to bat for their second innings, pitch was offering considerable turn and that was the reason Banerjee, fourth seamer, wasn't used at all in that innings. Unfortunately we didn't have any frontline spinner in our attack and Ravi Shastri, who had stopped bowling almost completely by that time, had to fill in the gap. He did a very good job by picking four wickets in that innings, yet Aussies managed to hold onto a draw, with help of IIRC solid defiance from Border. We were left wondering what if there was a spinner to support Shastri? After this match Banerjee, was part of indian squad for WC 92 - didn't do much there. After that I didn't hear of him, until I saw this scorecard :winky:

Still I would say Samir Dighe was better than Deep Dasgupta. His wicket keeping was absolutely pathetic and batting wasn't good enough to earn a test cap on it's own.

His keeping was terrible. IIRC he drooped Carl Hooper when he was on 1 or maybe 0 and he went on to make 233 in that match. He also dropped Craig White and he also went on to make a century and turned the match on its head.

but he could have become a very good test batsman solely for his batting..don't know why selectors didn't persist with him as an opener even he did fairly well. He could have played as a batsman only, had very good technique. He was better than Akash Chopra as a batsman with good technique and had some shots too

when a batsman like Akash Chopra could play as an opener for India, Deep Dasgupta too...he was much better than Nayan Mongia as an opener. He was capable of playing as a batsman only, IMO, on those days.
