ganeshran Posted October 10, 2012 Author Posted October 10, 2012 In terms of arms purchases we have been leaning towards the west for quite some time now, The Rafale deal, the C-17 transport plane deal with US and another combat helicopter deal with the US which Russia lost. However, in terms of political support, the West has never been a reliable ally while Russia and erstwhile USSR has always supported us. The US has always been mindful of its relationship with Pakistan and till recently the UK often used to lean towards them. If **** hits the fan in the Kashmir issue, Russia and its veto in the UNSC would be very important to us.

A veto could be worked out with their assistance. Increased trade with US/UK should also help our cause. Besides that, i would feel the days of us being wary of a UN resolution are done & dusted.

The Russian side has announced the introduction of Indian illegality of penalties for delay in delivery of the aircraft carrier, accusing the Indian Navy in the purchase of low-quality parts. India is planning to demand compensation from Russia for delays in the delivery of "Vikramaditya" at a meeting of defense ministers , Anatoly Serdyukov and Arakaparambila Kurian Antony. Earlier, Russian news agencies reported that there were no complaints from the Indian Defense Ministry did not arrive, and India agreed on the need to finalize the power plant "Vikramaditya" and a new schedule of delivery vehicle. The source said the Defense News, India are still raised in the talks the issue of compensation, but the Russian side rejected it. I am not sure if Gorshkov will support the Sukhoi, since India ordered 12 Mig29Ks with the carrier. The initial delivery date was supposed to be 2008, now it could be as late as 2015.

The former was retired before the latter was actually commissioned. The effects of this mess are reverberating across the forces with the Chinook winning against the Mi-26

IAC 1 won't "support" su 30s either since there is no catapult launch (CATOBAR). Both Vikramaditya and IAC 1 are ramp launch (STOBAR) so only MIG 29Ks (I think the plan includes 46 mig 29ks) and LCA Navy are suitable. Even Rafale may be too heavy for Ramp Launch. I think the design process of IAC 2 is delayed because Navy is contemplating CATOBAR. As for the second point, there is no point harping on about delays, if your defense policy calls for massive foreign procurement. No large, self respecting nation depends on foreign vendors for arms. These kind of screw jobs from foreign suppliers will continue (TINA) until MOD makes a concerted effort to prop up indigenous defense industry.
