Dhoni is IMO already 1 of the best captain India have ever.....plus his cool presence is 1 of the best among all Intl Captains currently. Only if he can get his batting more consistant at the Test level....then he will surely be counted as great

Bollinger??? really???? The problem with judging batsmen is that there are no really good attacks they can score great runs against like Tendulkar and Lara did in the 90's. Steyn is head and shoulders above any other bowler- definitely an all time great- there is no one else though. I hope there is no vaccum for a long time. The quality of cricket now pales really compared to the 90'sHow about 'His Uselessness' a.k.a Kaif? Any hopes there?

That coupled with captaincy should make him a memorable player at the very least.
jairamesh Posted June 8, 2011 Posted June 8, 2011 It's a fool game to predict the next greats. 10 years ago the likes of Kallis, Sanga, Sehwag, Ponting were never considered greats. Infact Dale Steyn was huge flop during his early years. I remember around 2004, players like Michael Vaughan, Graeme Smith, Shane Bond, Harbajhan Singh, Harmison were touted as potential greats yet they failed to perform at that sustained high levels. And today no sane cricket follower would call them "great". Peter Roebuck is stuck in nostalgic wonderment of ex-Windies and Waugh-era Australia side, to dismiss the current (or future) generations. Infact there are more players, more venues, more teams and more games played then ever making it difficult to put on those sustained top notch performances.

The man has achieved much to be proud of- U19 WC, WC 03 finalist, a few solid test innings including a ton after which he was rather unfairly dropped and a fine captain of one of the best domestic sides of the last 6 or 7 years. I do not think however that he has done enough to be deemed an all time great.

Yes, he did have some amazing spells and couple of good knocks but he is quite a way to go challenge Frieddie or Botham IMO. He needs greater consistency with both bat and ball. I will not put him at the level of ABD for e.g. as a potential great who already has good figures. Him being a ***** can also damage him as a player when he rises up unless off course he can change it all!!!!
