Kohli's batting position deserves a seperate thread. Do you think he should come so low down? I feel he would do good at 4 or 5.

When everyone is fit, he has to play at 6 behind Sachin and VVS, but I was thinking that he could be possibly be played at 4 in the WI. I am assuming Laxman will shift to 4 in Tendulkar's absence, but playing Kohli could split up the two experienced batsmen (Dravid and VVS), especially given Raina/Badrinath will be at 6.

Hmm.. Whatchu talking about mate? Couple of things – When Indian team is at full strength and all our players are available for selection, Virat Kohli ALREADY bats at no.4 (behind Sach, Viru and Gautam). In the case of his batting position when the team isn’t in full strength (which has happened more often than not in the last 2 years), you would not be asking this question had you a) watched Virat bat in ODIs since the start of 2010 and b)watched the sequence of events unfold in the WC. Remember, when the world cup started, the team chose to have Yusuf Pathan in the place of Raina for his hitting capabilities. And in order to capitalize on opposition bowling, Yusuf was routinely promoted up the order ahead of Kohli in the league stages, which meant Kohli had to bat lower down. That did not work at all, mostly because is Kohli is not suited to be a lower-middle order. He is someone who needs time to settle down, get his innings started and then begin flourishing his innings. But when he came lower down the order, he couldn’t press the accelerator pedal immediately when we needed quick runs and got out cheaply frequently. Because of this, our batting collapsed repeatedly in the WC after good starts. It didn’t take long for the team to realize that. They dropped Yusuf, got in Raina to bolster the lower-order and pushed Kohli up the order. The results were there for everyone to see. Raina immediately stabilized the lower order batting and anchored our chase during a tense QF against Australia. Kohli’s natural batting spot is no.3. which is where he has been at his menacing best in ODIs in the last 18 months, since that B’desh series in Jan 2010. Most of the runs he has scored has come in that position, mainly because Sachin has chosen to avoid ODIs, meaning Viru and Gambhir open the innings and Virat comes in at no.3. If anything, he probably has the highest averages among all no.3 batsmen in world cricket since that time period. And you’re saying he needs to bat lower down the order.
