A quick comparison of Bhaji with the best spinner curently In his last 31 tests, Swann has taken 138 wickets Bhajji in his last 31 tests has taken how many? exactly 138 wickets , this despite playing mostly on some of the most docile wicket ever seen in test cricket. And yet all we hear about is how crap Bhajji has been and how brilliant Swann has been.

I support Bhajji in tests, but not so much in ODIs. In tests he has done very very well. I read on Padosi forums that Warne had 407 wickets in 92 tests, Bhajji has 393 in 93. He has bad form in the last one year or so but he can overcome it. But in ODIs, the time is ripe to start the succession plan. Ashwin has nowhere done enough to be compared with Bhajji yet, but we atleast need to give him more chances to understand if he is able to adapt to big matches and unfriendly conditions.

Bhajji may have been good in tests but nobody can deny that he was not his best in the World Cup. Even Yuvraj bowled better than him and he was considered our main strike bowler. If it was not for Yuvraj's bowling, Bhajji may have cost the world cup for India. On some pitches where other teams' bowlers were getting good spin and bounce, Bhajji struggled with his line and length.

Most of the time criticism for Bhajji comes when we play ODI or T20. Also his record against Asian teams is poor so much so fans started suggesting dropping of Bhajji against them. He averages 48, 52, and 38 r against BD, Pakistan and SL respectively.

Good post. We should value Bhajji more. In spite of all the hatred, the guy has gone on taking bucketful of wickets and helping Indian win many matches. He has been our best spinner since Kumble. He is no superman, but he is a very good spinner.

And he totally out bowled Swann in world cup and Swann has awful record in India. Bhaji will out bowl Swann in England tour, mark my words! But that wont stop the mob hating:--D

People can bring in all stats they want but any fool can tell that There are much better spinners out there in international cricket (even in India). Only thing helping him survive is his tremendous fighting ability - he loves getting into scrap and likes to dominate and hit back with bat and ball. but he is not at all consistent and not attacking enough. Would love to have him prove me wrong but if he does not do well it is time he gets dropped to spend some time working on his game. He needs to think about what all made him such an attacking bowler in his early days.

And what a quality that is. Also has tremondous staimina, as like kumble even on flat tracks and long days , keeps going to the end and perseves and often gets the job done. Got to be mentally strong as well as talented and bhaji has plenty of heart, which is great to have especially in long hard tests. 350 plus wickets in tests is no joke. He should get enormous credit from that from the mob!

true but sometimes only stamina and fighting ability will not carry you. you have to get back to the basics. Even Kumble was fading out in early 2000's was not even considered in 2003 Aus tour initially but came back strongly working on his googly (which he rarely used before) and other variations and after that he became a better bowler in overseas conditions too.

Over a period he became somewhat a defensive bowler.

Harbhajan has taken most of those wickets on Indian spin friendly pitches unlike Swann which is why he is rated highly.

When Indian batsmen score runs in India, pitches are flat. When Indian spinners take wickets in India, pitches are spin friendly. :hmmm:

I think the issue people have with Swann and Bhajji is that, Harbhajan had a legendary start to his career while swann had an ordinary one. So the expectations from Bhajji, particularly since he belongs to India, is much more. Recently, while Swann's game has increased by leaps and bounds, Bhajji's has detoriated. So accordingly, and rightly, people praise Swann and put down Bhajji
