Of all the greatest mismatches, the most damaging is that between time and work. If you have a lot of work and very little time, that's good- all your energies are focused on completing the job and very little is wasted. The bad mismatch arises with the reverse- a job that doesn't demand your full and unceasing attention, or worse- no job at all. Job can be employment or studies- so this includes students. Spare time takes the path of least resistance- internet. Brain in 4th gear, idle debates, nothing at stake, clock-watching. It kills the soul and demeans you. You are looking for some crumbs of comfort that this is time well spent- so any e-accolades are most welcome. It's a kind of sop to the guilty conscience that's screaming out at you at your profligacy with time. Fortunately, my profession keeps me at an equivalent of a dog doing a perpetual long distance run, tongue hanging out, trying to catch the ever diminishing breath....most of the time. A struggle just to stay alive. Unfortunately, on days like this, with time to kill, the old Dhondy comes out- dispensing unwanted wisdom, hoping for a pat on the back, missing out on a chance to read up the latest articles in journals bought with hard earned money. It's a slippery slope guys- be warned.
Guilty of doing all this - except for the part "for pat on the back", - I care least about it..and thanks for reminding - "missing out on a chance to read up..." :((

Its not just SRT ... I have stats for every single player but I simply don't share them as I'am tired of dealing with idiots with fat ego's who have no sense of honesty or integrity even on a freakin anonymous forum. I have deleted most of those stats now.
I thought you kept stats as a of hobby and to share with others either online or in brick and mortar.... If the main purpose was to use them for your arguments online then yeah it is not a bad idea to delete them. On the other hand, you don't have to share them with ppl who don't agree with your interpretation but share them with those who do .... No point in being bitter because of how others see your interpretations. Once you post something online, ppl will give feedback whether positive or negative, like what you are doing here

That is the biggest reason for which now I have, kind of, stopped getting into debates in online discussions. Once I had got very passionately involved in Bradman vs Sachin debate and I had got positive comments from both the sides of argument, as I wasn't trying to prove my point only. But over a period of time, I realized that in online discussions you would never know if the guy you arguing with even serious about the topic or just baiting you. However, even the bigger problem in being dishonest (that is when in your heart you know you are wrong, but would not admit it in fear that you'll sent further on backfoot) and not owning up to your statements. But if you look at larger picture, I think these are the same problems which we face in real life as well and lead to acrimony within family or friends. On a side note I think, smileys should be banned from the threads where people seemingly engaged in serious discussion. Just my opinion, mods can think over.

I don't think online debates aren't any different from face to face ones except for the fact that you do have endless time to keep debating online in a thread over months. In real life, you probably discuss a topic for not more than 5 mins and then agree to disagree and move on and most likely avoid the topic the next time you meet the same person.

Ok confession time. Who here doesnt enter into a debate with a pre-concived notion (Sachin is great, no he isnt) and then all the data which is pulled is to justify that. So instead of analyzing the data and then coming to a conclusion, we search for data which fits our view-point

that happens pretty much all the time with everyone.

Wrong.I have many a time seen posters (not trolls) getting ridiculed at a personal level here when they do not agree with the majority view. That is highly unlikely in the real world.

Appears as if the backfire thread will itself backfire on its intentions .... Already this is begining to fill up with some sad stories of how some ppl lost some debate (there is always a reason for that duh)

:hysterical: *who isgoing to define what constitutes as serious as line "Tendulkar is the greatest" itself could count as a joke to many"

I have caught myself being abusive at people and that's when I decided that I don't want to get too involved in any of these debates. I prefer doing my analysis and present it to the public. If people agree then good, if not then fine...ask them for improvement feedback but if they don't provide then just know that they were never in it to discuss the subject at all.

On the whole I think facts are one thing and opinions are another. Opinions are as important as facts and we have evolved to process both of them with our minds. In other words we use both objective and subjective faculties of our minds that evolution has helped us grow. To take the example of Bradman (coz that is the one going on here), it is a fact that he averages 99.94. No one can dispute that. But it is only through subjective understanding of the game of cricket that one can understand that Bradman did not face half the quality of bowlers that someone like Greg Chappell faced for the most part. So the "fact" of 99.94 is in itself bound by those four variables - time, space, perspective, and context. You change the variables and the "meaning/importance" of the "fact" changes. By and large I agree with the quotes in the OP. I also believe that reality is what we choose it to be So for Rett Bradman is the supreme personality of batsmanship while for me Sachin is the Buddha. And hey both of us are equally right (or wrong).

See Rett, this is the exact attitude of yours that pisses people off. Of course I am biased at viewing you as being the instigator of bad behavior because you hold a different opinion than me on the Sachin = Greatest thingy. But I have rarely seen you making an effort to have a decent discussion on this topic. Feel free to mock me as much as you like for the above

If one sees, there is a lot in common b/w those who * make the most noise (like empty vessels) * complain when they lose * act as if they are the victims * make laughable arguments but others are suppose to see them with all seriousness * follow ppl on other threads to write stuff against them (which they see as retribution) * have inflated internet egos and these group also happens to think "Tendulkar is the greatest" and don't mind even putting down other greats (including Indians)

But all those traits are found in the "Bradman is greatest / Sachin is not the greatest" group as well.
