Pakistan cannot afford to match the induction of modern weaponry by India, which possibly has a greater capacity to sustain a war, Pakistani Defence Minister Chaudhry Ahmad Mukhtar has said. “If we only try to match them (India) militarily and buy the sort of armament which they have, we will probably not be able to afford it,†Mr. Mukhtar said. Explaining his contention, he noted that India’s economy is “six to seven times bigger than†Pakistan’s and its trade volumes were “five to six times greater.†“The capacity of India and Pakistan to fight was for 20 to 22 days. Now India has inducted a lot of armaments, may be they can last for 45 days, we will not be able to do so,†Mr. Mukhtar said in an interview to BBC Urdu. He was responding to a question on whether the projection of India as Pakistan’s greatest enemy was the root of the country’s problems. Mr. Mukhtar noted that the two countries were taking steps to improve relations in the aftermath of the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks. “Slowly the process of meetings has started. People are going across the border. Nobody had ever thought they could walk suitcase in hand to Amritsar via Wagah but that is the reality now and it is happening,†he said. This was happening, he said, “in spite of the fact that wars were fought, there were problems on the border and the Mumbai incidentâ€. Asked why an incident like the Mumbai attacks occurred whenever relations improved between the two countries, Mr. Mukhtar said: “It is very unfortunate that such incidents happen and they should not happen. But there are players who are behind these incidents.†He did not give details about such elements but said some of them had been arrested and put on trial. Matters would improve when “we decide that religion and politics should not be mixed togetherâ€, he said. “Let them go side by side. There should be no restrictions on religion which is between me and my God.†Earlier this year, India and Pakistan revived their dialogue process, which was suspended for over two years in the wake of the Mumbai attacks which were carried out by Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba. __________________

Only a Pakistani Defence Minister can talk like that. Cant think of any other country where a Defence Minister would use those terms. That being said, the jury is still out on India's Nuclear detonation. In a conventional war we could have beaten the $***** out of Pakistan. With N-bomb it is all equal now. And involves the attention of all the world powers too.

Even in a nuclear war we will beat the s.h1t out of Pakistan - the only problem is the increase in diplomatic and political cost of the conflict. In the advent of a nuclear war, India's economic progress will suffer a heavy jolt and we will go back 5-10 years, but on the other side, the very existence of Pakistan will come into question. In other words, we can still survive a full blown nuclear conflict but Pakistan cannot.

Yeah but who wants to be a basket case? I mean whats the point of blowing up Pakistan and in the process go back decades?? I doubt thats a choice any Indian would like to take.

No one wants, and thats the deterrence value of nuclear weapons. they just increase the cost of conflict and hence increase reluctance of leaders to take the crucial step towards war However when both nations have nukes, they do little to alter the existing balance of power and do not equalize military capability. Just because Pakistan has nukes, doesn't make them militarily equal to us - we will still win any non-querilla war with Pakistan, nuclear or not.

So how did N-bomb help at all?

N-Bomb would have helped one nation if the other didnt acquire them. However our acquisition of the bomb made it impossible for Pakistan not to acquire it, given the centricity of their armed forces towards India. Once both the countries had acquired it, it became more of a deterrent rather than anything else. I doubt if either India or Pakistan would ever be able to attack one another with the bomb

By the way you sounded there as if once India exploded the bomb Pakistan simply went out and build its own version in a week :giggle:

That is true, there is a big gap between India and Pakistan but sadly there is a bigger gap between india and china with even our army acknowledging

How did it not help India's case? It gave us an effective deterrent against China just like it gave Pakistan an effective deterrent against us. Pakistan had been working on the bomb right from Bhutto's time but they didnt have any choice but to go for the explosion once India had done so.

So essentially what you are saying is Pakistan, India both had bombs for a while and this was just to go public? Again to reiterate what I have said, I am not sure how much it actually helped. Chinese always knew we had the bomb, it was not exactly a earth shattering revealation for them. Although Pakistan did go crazy and started a route to disaster since then

And involves the attention of all the world powers too.[/quote'] Relax folks, there's no nuclear war happening. India more or less has a no first use policy & no leader of Pakistan is going to risk annihilation. If there indeed is a lunatic who comes to power, expect a covert special forces operation to either take him and his bunch out or to neutralize the Made in China bombs & missiles. Needless to say, most of us would prefer both. The risk of a dirty bomb in the hands of LeT etc is surely there and i do not think India would launch a nuclear strike as a response. BTW this Mukhtar is indeed stupid. While our military planners work on enhancing response times for deployment & working on rapid short term gains based on the cold start doctrine, this fool still thinks about war going on for more than a month. Perhaps he's one of those with the fake college degree.

N Bomb only helped their military gain points with the "see now india cant invade us and take our land" News flash India never ever invaded Pakistan...India has always been happy with the land they have and want to make the current LOC a permanent border. Its the Paks that cant accept this. Also Pakistan not being able to match India in anything...is this really news? Id be more interested if Pakistan can match Afghanistan militarily.
