No. It happens in the US. This is just blind Israel worshipping. Something like a disease widespread in Indians. Electric stations for charging vehicles . This idea is about 30 years old.
I remember reading somewhere that mission critical R&d works for companies like intel takes place in Isreal or by its Israeli team .... If I m not wrong centurion or low voltage processor was developed by Israeli team .... And yes, I like Israel. Any problems with that? And I am talking about the idea of making an entire country oil free not of charging stations. Though by charging stations i meant stations that replace the battery in less than 60 seconds. I should have been more specific. One of the issues of replacing batteries in an electric vehicles is that if it is not done properly, the vehicle could explode. What an Israeli company is doing is using the laser guidance technology used in getting missiles to their target for replacing batteries. The entire process is suppose to take 60 seconds or so and as convenient as putting gas in your vehicle. :winky:

You cannot be what you are not. You are what you are! If you change yourself to portray who you are, then you become something different from who you really are. Trying to emulate the west is the worst thing we can do if we want to maintain our own identity, unfortunately that's the path we are taking.
Being creative and innovative is also about being original .... In fact we are imitating west now by coping and recycling the ideas :P

Dude, Israel is able to spend so much on R&D because they have a sugar daddy with an endless supply of money in the United States. Where the heck do you think all that money comes from? Sure as hell, it ain't falling from the sky or growing on trees.

It's not the money that does the R&D, it's the people .... Israel has a culture that promotes entrepreneurial spirit and encourages innovation .... If India was as good in R&D, I am sure companies from around the world would be interested in investing in India. There is a reason why companies like Intel. Google, Microsoft, etc want to invest in R&D centers in Israel ***** Israel is one of the examples, not the main topic of this thread. The crux of the thread is Indian renaissance. If anyone is interested in bashing Israel then feel free to open another thread

WRONG. I work in R&D and the bottom line is crystal clear: No Money == No Results. All that fluff about culture is utter bung. You pay someone well enough and they will build you a spaceship to Jupiter.

Long story short: No Funding == No Research == No Jobs. Nobody gives two hoots about culture, innovation, entrepreneurial spirit and whatever else you're fantasizing over.
You have spoken like a green horn No money = no honey and that is applicable in most fields .... In most industries, R&D is a key factor. R&D not only creates new knowledge but also increases the ability to learn and the ability to use existing know-how. In short, most industries do R&D. What's important is how and where the money budgeted for R&D is spent. This is where Israel's reputation as a knowlede center comes into play. If you dig further to find out why this reputation was developed, you might get some sense of what I am trying to say

You really are clueless about what you're talking about. I spent 2+ years (1.5 years in defense) in R&D and know a thing or two about what I am on about. You on the other hand, are talking a load of nonsense based on some stupid Youtube videos.

Sure! But that 2+ years experience of yours means little to me as the people I deal with in R&D are senior managers and vice president of technology. They have years of experience, on top of having fancy degrees. Unfortunately, these people have to go by my opinion of what makes business sense. And since I work closely with enginerring and R&D, I know, at least, what goes on in my company, which is pretty big. And it goes about its buisness like most big companies. So based on that would you not say that I would know a bit about what goes on in R&D in big companies? And then you say that you have 2+ years of experience but let's say if I were working in your field and working closely with R&D dept, I would probably be dealing with your senior manager or even vice president. Not w/ someone with 2 years of experience, who might not have enough decision making power.

The head honchos of R&D usually are not technical people. They probably are responsible for bringing the funding in. This is the difference between you and me: Rett: Works with people in R&D Sree: Works DIRECTLY in R&D on the technical side of things.

Nope, the seniors managers in R&D would be engineers and higher you go, the more fancy degrees (in engineering and R&D) they are likely to have. You cannot head a department w/o knowing what it's about. But anyways, let's assume that all heads are dumb and they have got the position using connections. In your post, you said that the heads are resposible for bringing the funding in and what I said is that bringing the funding in for the right projeact w/ the right people usually is not a problem. On the other hand, you are the guy who does the leg-work and you are doing the leg-work because someone is funding for that. So the long story that you tried to cut short, is not totally applicable to what I am trying to say Let's just leave it at that :--D

All right. From my experience, the higher guys in R&D do most of the business type management and leave the technical details to lower level engineers. By lower level, I mean someone with degree + 2/3 years experience.

With few more years of experience and a timely vacancy, hopefully you would advance higher up :good:

Nah. Depends on the kind of company and the level of research you are doing. NASA employs shitload of PhDs for purely engineering research tasks, so do Google, Intel etc. The model you talk about is mostly followed in traditional companies like the automotive companies , who often outsource their real research to universities and/or other smaller more specialized firms.

Thanks. I have no input and/or understanding of the business level decisions the higher guys make. They come to me and go: "We want you to build this, you got 1 week to do it. Prepare a demo of what you've done".

That's how you start and then you work your self up In my field, Business level decisions are taken by the business dept. Business decisions are highly critical and impact the whole organization so not everyone would want to take responsibility for them. Most people like to do what they are told to do and if anything goes wrong, then they say "but I only did this because I was told to do so" :winky: R&D is one of the depts (an important one) of a company but it is usually not responsible for business decisions .... R&D and Engineering's role is in product development, product testing, coordinating with engineers of the customers', getting the necessary approvals (for example Chinese market would need X certification, Latin America would need Y, etc). Eng/R&D dept can only start developing the product once a decision has been made to pursue the business by the business dept. Since the engineering dept is constantly working with engineering dept of the customers', sometimes it can come up with suggestions on product development or pass on information on planned use of x product that is currently used in say NA in Europe in future, etc but the decision on whether to pursue that comes from business. This is on the OEM side .... For RE market, the products need to be constantly improved, new technology, more efficient products, etc have to be worked on too. For this there has to be a certain budget allocated Usuallu an engineer is only responsible for a particular project so like what you said he/she may not know how the decisions are taken
