But controversial star Kevin Pietersen has inadvertently rekindled the debate over the prevalence of South African-born cricketers in the England set-up by announcing in a throwaway line: ‘I’m not English, I just work here.’ Pietersen, born in Pietermaritzburg, will be one of four players from South Africa — alongside captain Andrew Strauss, Jonathan Trott and wicketkeeper Matt Prior — included this morning in the England squad for the first Test against India at Lord’s which starts on Thursday. According to Cowan, Pietersen ‘was heard to exclaim, as he cast his eye over the lunch buffet: “What the **** is this?” ’ Cowan told him that, being English, he should recognise bread-and-butter pudding when he saw it, to which he claims Pietersen replied: ‘I’m not ****ing English, Eddie. I just work here!’-Daily Mail Seems like taken out of context, as nothing officially said to the media and rather claimed in someone's autobiography. Nevertheless, I wouldn't call Strauss and Prior South Africans, as their cricketing was found, bred, and nurtured in England, as opposed to Pietersen, Trott, Kieswetter etc. who came through the South African system.

He had a funny twang back then. I'm not saying it's a fake accent but he definitely sounds different. Anyway, there is no way Strauss should be considered a Saffa.

If you hang around a certain group of people and you hear them talk, you automaticaly inharite that accent (assuming that you come at a younge age)

Their fans have no shame, and are happy as long as they win. I'm proud that 11 Indians topped the rankings, and won the World Cup. When England won the World T20, I think Collingwood was the only actual Englishman to bat in the final, and he scored about 5? can't remember exactly. When that young Irish spinner, Dockrell, did well in the World Cup, the English were openly talking about his selection for England, how is this right? With these kind of antics, England should have got to the number one ranking ages ago...

Nonetheless, he was a gutsy, determined cricketer in the same mould as Gambhir/Raina. Wasn't blessed with enormous talent, but more than made up for it with grit.
