Sachin=GOD Posted December 17, 2011 Author Posted December 17, 2011 @people who say that chess is not a sport: how/why does it matter whether its a sport or not? What matters is that Anand has performed exceptionally well in that particular field.
Number Posted December 17, 2011 Posted December 17, 2011 Really ironic , apparently the only place where people are supporting cases of chess , kho-kho , gilli danda , ludo and saanp-seedhi players ahead of a cricket player is a cricket forum.
mishra Posted December 17, 2011 Posted December 17, 2011 BTW why so much blind greatness affiliated to Vishy? Whether he was number 1 or number 2. Kasporaov allways owned him. Politics within FIDE has helped Anand. Kasporov is modern chess great and Not the Anand. http://www.mid-day.com/sports/2010/may/200510-vishwanathan-anand-world-chess-champion-garry-kasparov-vladimir-kramnik.htm
Precambrian Posted December 17, 2011 Posted December 17, 2011 even stephen hawkings can play chess.. it aint a sport.
SachDan Posted December 17, 2011 Posted December 17, 2011 Bharat Ratna for Vishy ahead of Sachin ?! bloody hypocrites!
Raghav_12 Posted December 17, 2011 Posted December 17, 2011 Anand isn't getting the Bharat Ratna anytime soon. Its going to be Goddy and maybe Major DhyanChand (he may or may not get it right now simply because there may not be enough "powerful" people pushing for him name years after he has passed away). Agree with the above. Vishwanathan Anand is not frontrunner for Bharat Ratna. In my opinion, only being best, which too Anand hasn't been for majority of his career, is not enough. It has to be something with which most of the Indians can associate themselves. You may be best in world in something but if your success doesn't bring pride, joy to majority of the countrymen, then it doesn't help your candidature much. Somethings which go against Anand are, a) Chess is an individuals game which you play against your name, not against the name of country, though you may declare yourself as citizen of particular country b) IIRC, Anand has never been keen to play chess olympiad where you represent your country, not yourself. He may have his own reasons for that, but yet fact is he hardly represented India in that. c) He stays in Spain most of his time and doesn't involve himself much with things Indian. I would pick Kapil or Dhoni ahead of Vishy. For me Major Dhyanchand or Sachin is frontrunner. DhyanChand's achievement were way back in past, so that may go against him. But yeah, he is definitely a deserving candidate. If he had played in the same era as Sachin did, with similar level of achievements, then it was a no-brainer that who should get it first.
Singham Posted December 17, 2011 Posted December 17, 2011 Sachin should receive Bharat Ratna Have you seen god receiving an award? No? Well, you have an opportunity now!!!!! Watch for it!!! SACHIN the god will soon receive bharat ratna :hatsoff: :two_thumbs_up:

The last para sums it all up... good views... i do think what if dhyanchand played in this era... he would have been the best and this would most probably have been a hockey forum... :p
mishra Posted December 19, 2011 Posted December 19, 2011 you've lot of faith in mid day ?? huh No, Midday was first result to my search. I remember the controvetrsies..... Thats why I said, I wouldnt buy Vishy being greatest theory.... All those Russian, Russian origin chess players have dominated the game. Yes Vishy is only outsider.... That is his credit

He has done many things which Kaspy can't even dream of: 1. Winning WCC in all 3 formats, match, tourney and ko. 2. Winning Classical,Rapid,Blitz,Blindfold,Advanced chess, Kaspy was good only in classical. 3. Beating Kramnik whom Kaspy could never figure out:giggle: Kramnik rates Anand equal to Kaspy in this interview http://whychess.com/node/1605 Get a life dude.

Kasporov better than him is fact.... Greatness to me means has he also inspired people towards that sports purely by his talent. While Anand generated public interest to some extent but not enough to create another one to compete within that circle. PS: I removed the last comment from your update because i think thats nowhere related to argument.
bulbul Posted December 19, 2011 Posted December 19, 2011 Just becuase govt added sports in Bharath ratna category doesnt mean that automatically people has to get that... Let them give it to some other people who genuinly helped people..

There are other factors beyond their individual passion, excellence that affect how a generation perceives them, and whether or to what extent emulate them. As for the argument about Vishy was not better than Kasporov (though that was only in classical chess) - should not be used to evaluate Vishy's eligibility for a medal that is given to an Indian. IIRC, I guess there was no other Indian before Vishy, who stayed at world top for so long duration. [ I am not saying he is better candidate than SRT/DhyanChand, but his achievements are as great as any other great Indian Sportsman. Even then someone wants to compare SRT/Vishy - it should be like, for what portion of their careers, they stayed among top 1-5 of their field....extra points for #1, and some points for staying in top 5. I guess, Vishy wont be too far behind. ]
saneindian Posted December 19, 2011 Posted December 19, 2011 Why does Sachin deserve the Bharat Ratna ahead of Kapil or even Gavaskar? Sachin sould get the award but not when he is still playing but after he has retired and definitely not ahead of so many sproting icons of the nation. If the criterion has been changed now, let the other past sporting greats be awarded first. There are a number of legends who got the award years after they had stopped being the best in their chosen professions. And while the debate lingers on, I was shocked to find that Homi Bhabha, the father of nuclear energy in India, is yet to be awarded the highest civilian honour. He doesn't have a political group backing him and hence him missing out doesn't make the headlines.

Based on relative (relativeto rest of world) popularity of Chess in India, I believe Vishy could have inspired few players to get pro. AIMO Longetivity in chess shoulnt be compared to that of longetivity in sports. People are allready arguing about COUCH nature of chess.

BTW Bhabha case is abit political. Association of Eastern poyz with Nuclear reaseach doesnt o really well with west.
