Is our batting over rated?

If anything we are underrated...Despite Having 2 of the highest run-getters in history of the game 4 players in the top 25 run getters of all time in tests Tied spot for most triple hundreds 122 hundreds among 4 of our players If some of us still beleive we are a weak squad then we are underrating our batting
So if the west bring back viv richards, brian lara, and gary sobbers right now would the west indies have one of the greatest batting lines up of all time? Indias batting line up looks great on paper but because of fitness issues, age and lack of quality back up batsman we loose matches that a team like England would draw 9 times of 10.

They also collapsed to 51 all out in the WI.

Yeh on this board the same people that have moved to foreign lands for better opportunities have it in them to criticise englands selection policy' date=' is a joke.[/quote'] I cant even begin to describe the irony and the stupidity in this post

those pitches weren't flat. Its been a very long time since their batting collapsed twice in a test match on a flat pitch, And I never said that England batting line up doesn't have its issues, your ignoring Indias batting short comings by bringing up Englands issue on more bowling friendly pitches. I am mentioning the fact that our batting line up looses the plot on perfectly batter friendly pitches. Our batting galaticos couldn't pass 300 once on a pitch were the sri lankan batsman (who struggle to breath outside the subcontinent.) posted 450+ and 150/3 and no one wants to criticize the batsman.

I'm not ignoring anything but just pointing out that all batting line ups collapse occasionally.

But England don't collapse as often on good batting pitches because their players are younger fitter and miss less games and look less rusty as a result of that than Indian batsman which is essentially what I am saying. Of course if you measure every Indian batsman entire career and compare them to other teams of course they look like one of the greatest batting line up of all time but that isn't exactly how matches are won. or drawn i guess would be the more appropriate term. India will come back and win the series after Gambhir tendu laxman and co show England their class but constantly giving away test matches like this will eventually come back to haunt us sooner or later.

Jamaica was just that once in a life time spell from Jerome Taylor, not too worried about that, especially when we racked up 500 in every innings after that. Chris Martin had a similar spell against India but Harbhajan bailed India out.

Well looks like I wasn't a million miles away from the truth. This is what happens when you have 3 35+ year olds in the line up along with 2 openers who are prone to missing matches and going long periods of poor form plus untested batting depth. Bottom line our domestic infastructure needs to be reformed and lack of Money can't be excuse enymore considering how much the bcci makes.

Not really, in fact I would argue otherwise. Just imagine how good our batting has been that we actually were ranked no. 1 in Tests with the kind of bowling lineup that we have. Plus we managed to win the WC with the same bowling lineup due to our batting. One poor series shouldn't cloud people's judgement on what we have done over the years.

I believe that our batting failures went unnoticed because of renaissance of SRT. When he performed, team's batting revolved around him and we never felt like batsman are struggling. Sehwag has been in poor test form for long time and so has been Gambhir. Laxman, Dravid all have struggled recently before this series. We haven't found no 6 batsman yet. indbatting201011.jpg Dravid's average have been boosted by his recent performance in England. Sehwag's performance is going downhill especially in overseas matches. It can be said that we had only 2 batsman in some form after the WC. Dravid took a right decision and went to WI to regain his form, while SRT lost it. Notice the number of ducks of our modern players who are considered as potential replacement of likes of Sachin and Dravid.

i was just thinking ... i mean how can we lose a Test match with this kind of a batting lineup.. sorry it is the obvious, but has there EVER been a better batting lineup? Sehwag. (Match-Winner) Gambhir. (Top-Class) Dravid. (The Wall) Sachin. (God) Laxman. (Very Very Special) Rohit/Yuvi/Kohli/Raina (they could ALL make the test lineup for ANY other country) Mahi. (cant say he's a great test batsman, but still he is Dhoni) how can a bowling lineup take 20 wickets, when this kind of a batting lineup is out their?.. so my point is, if we do lose a test this summer, or in australia, the blame should be on the batsman !.. i believe it comes down to bowlers if we are to Win test matches this year in Tests.
When you look at such post then you can say that our batting is overrated especially when recent performances are overlooked.

Definitely not over rated but past sale by date for sure. Sehwag has always been like this, he has great couple of years and then fails in couple of series or three then makes a big comeback. Gambhir is not too bad but again big scores are at the moment hard to come by. Tendulkar's going through another dip in the form and Laxman after a long time is struggling to score big. The problem is you can't quite ask anyone from the top order to retire or take a break considering India has not even found a suitable replacement for Ganguly. Three years on since Ganguly's retirement India has not been able to find his replacement. Kohli, Raina, Yuvi are all heavily over rated. Tendulkar, Dravid, Laxman, Sehwag are certainly not over rated.

That's true. These players are already superstars. I mentioned this in some other thread few days ago. Earlier batsman used to announce themselves with performance in away tours. For ex - Sachin's Australia tour 20 years ago, Dravid on England tour, Ganguly on England tour. Laxman with that 167. After that trend has changed. Now players who haven't done anything in tests, played few ODIs are already stars in this country. Recently IPL has contributed more to it.

Its all relative, when comparing to this awesome England set-up at the moment, then yes obviously team India is crap in all departments as everyone bar Dravid is being *** raped. But you could still give a decent game to any other team around, at least in your own country. :two_thumbs_up:

It is not overrated given how they have performed under different conditions, but have massively underperformed this series for sure.

They are deservedly getting ripped apart for their atrocious performances in this series (bar Rahul) but to call them over rated is to disregard years of good batting all over the world. As U_G says, to sustain the no.1 rank with our poor bowling shows the batsmen were doing something right in the past.
