Utalk Posted August 9, 2011 Posted August 9, 2011 SYDNEY - Pakistan-born Australian batsman Usman Khawaja on Tuesday said he was being refused a visa into India for next month's Champions League Twenty20 tournament because of his country of birth. Khawaja vented his anger on social media site Twitter, saying India's visa department "need to sort their issues out". "Refusing to let me travel to India as an Australian, because I wasn't born here. Wow," wrote the 24-year-old. In an exchange with his Portuguese-born New South Wales team-mate Moises Henriques, Khawaja said it "wasn't that I wasn't born here but where I was, brother". Cricket Australia (CA) confirmed that Khawaja's visa had been held up by officials at the Indian High Commission (embassy) but said they were confident of resolving the issue before the tournament. "There has been a stoppage in the system at the Indian High Commission in Australia with Usman's application," CA spokesman Philip Pope told AFP. "Cricket NSW and Cricket Australia are seeking to understand the detail behind the stoppage with our colleagues at the Indian High Commission." Pope said the cricketing body had a long-standing relationship with the Indian mission and "we generally find that we resolve our issues mutually, so we'll work through this once we've understood the detail". "I can't give you a timeline of when it will be resolved, but I'm confident given our history and our relationship that we will resolve this as soon as possible," he said. Khawaja, the first Muslim to wear the baggy green for Australia and also a qualified pilot, is on the 20-man long list for the NSW Twenty20 side, of which 15 will ultimately be sent. Number Posted August 9, 2011 Posted August 9, 2011 There might have been something wrong , which sometimes happens with these visa and all. Imran Tahir was playing in India in World Cup , so I don't think its got something to do with India-Pakistan relations.

When going to Australia they have their own stringent criteria of not bringing in foreign seeds/plants/foods etc that would impact their local ecology. India has been targetted by Pakistan born terrorists and terrorist groups before so the same stringent checks needs to be carried out. Indian cricketers had to be stopped in New Zealand to check their boots for foreign soil/seeds in our tour there because no exceptions could/should be made. Did you hear Indian players whining/complaining about it? - He's lying when he says it has been refused. CA is saying that there's a stoppage, not a refusal and is confident of getting it sorted out. It just sounds like Usman expects star treatment just because he's a cricketer and is butt-hurt because he's not getting it. What a crybaby.

I mean, I would love to know the thought process of the babus evaluating his visa and how they will backtrack when eventually they do give him the visa after some 'internal negotiations'. pure comedy :hysterical: Just for some cheap publicity that they exist and are doing their job. The problem is they rejected/delayed it when they probably knew what they are dealing with, and once the spotlight disappears off them, then only they will take action and resolve the issue.

There are strict guidelines and rules that they are only following including stopping the Visa applications for Pakistan born applicants. Who the hell cares if its some cricketer? If Usman thinks it's unfair then I'd love to see him try to fly to the US where he'll have to go through triple security checks, fully body scans, cavity searches, multiple screenings, and dry gang bangs by custom officers because of his name/birth country. Are you people telling me, that the Indian embassy will get on the phone to the pakodi embassy and confirm whethere or not Usman is a terrorist or not? :cantstop::cantstop:

NareshK Posted August 9, 2011 Posted August 9, 2011 There is some protocol that immigration officials have to follow. It doesnt matter if he is cricketer or film star or whatever. If something about him raises some alarm, whatever that may be they will have to do the necessary verification before they let him in. Its a serious matter of national security and lapses will result in terrible consequences. I'm not saying this guy is a potential threat but lackadaisical attitude like assuming so and so is not harmful will also result in similar neglect in other incidents which may prove deadly.
