NareshK Posted August 20, 2011 Posted August 20, 2011 The state was called West Bengal because Bangladesh was called East Bengal before independence. So they should have just renamed it Bengal if they really wanted because having the tag 'West' or 'Poschim' doesnt make sense when the state is in the eastern part of the country.

I dont think Bengaluru, Chennai or Mumbai lost its sheen globally after they are renamed.[/quote'] Except that they are still called by their original names by most of my foreign clients and there are many who were visibily confused for a long time and used to think that they(the original and the new name) were different cities. Plus think of the all the money and time invested for bringing the name change in all goverment documents, etc
