Taufel calls for greater accountability from umpires PTI MELBOURNE, June 21: Simon Taufel, voted Umpire of the Year, has called for greater accountability from his colleagues and under-performing umpires to be axed from the ICC Elite Panel. The Australian said if umpires made several incorrect decisions in a Test or through a series they should not be retained in the Elite panel. "We have now reached that point of reference where if match officials are being paid adequately, there needs to be greater accountability for performance and non-performance," Taufel said. "We have reached the stage that if umpires aren't performing to acceptable standards, they are not appointed for a period. Most people are happy to see that happen," he added. Taufel is the umpires' representative on the ICC cricket committee, which has made several recommendations to be considered by the ICC. The umpires are keen for a task force, with an independent chairman, to be set up to discuss how to improve umpiring standards.

Good on him. It's a breath of fresh of air when an umpire calls for more accountability. We are sick and tired of hearing ICC all the time putting up an excuse by saying the elite panel is the best, they have 98% decisions right, yada yada yada.... Good on Taufel to accept the responsibility and call for better umpiring. Post Dickie Bird I think Taufel has been the best followed closely by Aleem Dar.

ICC must increase the number of elite umpires..they should have some sort of coaching and training for umpires... from indian Sub-continent there are only 4 elite umpires..two from Pak..and 2 from SL.. of which only alim dar seems to be a good and competent fella...others are incompetent and inefficient.. i think atleast 2 elite umpires from each Test playing nation must be trained and evaluated periodically for elite umpiring... umpiring is 50% of cricket....and still ICC ignores it... they should bring technology wherever possible.. and TV umpire must have the power to overrule field umpire in case of mistakes..like over stepping no balls..bump catches...extra balls in an over.. a player muct be recalled or given out...if TV umpire finds a mistake before next ball is bowled... cricket needs to evolve... for fu(k sake...even wimbledon is changing and bringing some new things... ICC Hai hai....

replacements are created by training and education... i don't think ICC has got any training program for umpires..? there is no training school for umpires... most of the umpires do the umpiring as a second job..when they do not get any thing else to do... umpiring needs to be a full time job..even for domestic umpires.. they should be given contract...some security... only then we ill attract good talent.... BCCI must take some initiatives in umpiring... but expecting this from BCCI is like expecting ice on sun..

It will be total disaster if you have on-field umpire decision over-ruled by technology. It will decrease match momentum badly. Very rarely are bump-ball decisions, close run-out and stumping decisions got wrong these days anyway. But reverting an umpire decsion is not such a smart move. See the video below and you will understand what i am saying.. AF_VA2OK4HU
