saneindian Posted December 18, 2011 Posted December 18, 2011 Dada said "Rahul ko us time apna authority dikhana chahiye tha, wo captain tha aur cricket mein captain supreme hota hai"..He said exactly teose words on Dravid, nothing more, no malice,no ill will against Dravid, perhaps a bit of surprise that someone as sensible as Dravid got dictated by the crook Chappel. Obviously the spin media has put to those statements is OTT and too much of sensationalism.

So true...the stupid media translates the same in English and it sounds so rude... hindi is the best language ever :icflove:

Obviously the spin media has put to those statements is OTT and too much of sensationalism. Actually, before Chappell's entry, Dravid and Ganguly shared a great equation. Ganguly has publicly said many a times that he has been a successful captain because Dravid has been the most selfless vice-captain ever, who never tried to usurp the throne. And that is why both of them could work together very well. Dravid possibly changed a bit after Chappell's arrival, and never backed Ganguly when Ganguly expected him to back him. He possibly felt a little betrayed, and has remained bitter ever since.
bulbul Posted December 19, 2011 Posted December 19, 2011 Chappel may be villain but Ganguly is no saint either

Having said that, SG should also understand that every individual is different and has a way of doing things. I don't think people like RD or SRT can really put their foot down and ask for things. While others like himself or Kumble can do the same. It's not anyone's fault that things pan out this way or that.

Dravid wouldn't have been as vocal as Dada wanted which led him to say that use jyada authority dikhani chahiye thi. I am not a fan of Ganguly and I believe that if not for captaincy he would have played may be half of the test matches than what he actually did, but in fight with Chappell, I would always support him. Greg Chappell has failed woefully in all the things that he took up since retiring from International cricket and managed to take down team which he was given responsibility for. Not only India, he achieved same for Australia and state teams.

Had he not become a captain, Dada would have averaged somewhere around 50, scored 10k runs and played 125-130 tests and scored at least 25 100s. Was averaging 48 when he became the captain. 33 tests, 2548 runs@48 with 7 100s. Great stats for someone after 4 years of int'l cricket and someone whom one would expect to get become better. Captaincy took a toll on his test batting afterwards

Captaincy took a toll on his test batting afterwards No point in talking about what he would have done if he was not apointed Indian captain. If you look at batting numbers which he actually produced, they don't make him very worthy candidate for such long run - on batting alone. He ended up with an average of 42 which is very average for batsmen nowadays. And if as you say, for first 33 test he averaged 48, then he would have averaged less than 40 for rest of the career and still got to play 110+ test matches. He was never in league of Dravid, Sachin and Laxman.
saneindian Posted December 19, 2011 Posted December 19, 2011 Dada was doing well as a batsman till he became captain. He was neck to neck with RD for the first 4 years of their int'l cricket together. Wonder why you would assume he would have fallen by the wayside had he not become captain. Remember the circumstances he took the reins of the side, whitewash in Australia, series loss to SA at home and then the match fixing rut when every one thought cricket could be dead in the country..
Stuge Posted December 19, 2011 Posted December 19, 2011 Chappel dada :fight: who wins? I would say its chappel who won because of him gangu was kicked out .
Stuge Posted December 19, 2011 Posted December 19, 2011 I am not saying what he told was right or wrong. Its just the timing of the statement just before an important tour which i felt was not needed and that is why i said he is seeking attention. 100% agreed
J P K Posted December 19, 2011 Author Posted December 19, 2011 i cannot understand why dada keeps taking a dig at chappel in installments why cannot he write a book on him instead :poink:

These statements in bold part highlight the importance of role he played as captain. I am not doubting what he achieved as captain for Indian team. But as a test batsman I don't think you would put him in league of Sachin, Dravid etc. You can't argue with the points like, if he was not made captain, he would have done this or that. Also he didn't have game to eqaul Sachin or Dravid in test matches. I don't see any impact of captaincy on his batting in ODI's. So why it would have affected only in test matches? Simply, in today's era test batting average of 42 is pretty average.

Ganguly to his credit never said he was better than Dravid, or even Laxman so forget about Sachin who he has always maintained the best player ever. All he ever complained was the fact that he was thrown out of team for wrong reasons. Chappell of all people should have understood when batsman is out of form or is lacking confidence is the period when he needs the coach's backing.Greg instead of backing him went behind his back and leaked the matter to press. He also tried to do the same with Sachin but he Sachin proved too big for him. Every captain has a fixed shelf life after which he is no longer an asset to the team, it just happened that Chappell's tenure came right at the end of Ganguly's shelf life as captain.
Needforspeed Posted December 19, 2011 Posted December 19, 2011 One has to salute Ganguly for the pride he brought to Indian Cricket. He gave it back to the English and the Australians as good as he got. One can never forget the shirtless Ganguly on the Lords balcony on India's ODI series win. He changed the Indian cricket team form a team which lost sportingly to team which won. For that alone the Nation must be indebted to him and should forgive him for some of the politics he played towards the end of his career.

He only performed in the first year of his captaincy with his bat in 2000 and after that he lost all his form and here i am saying about ODIs only... his form dipped from 2001 till the end of his career... from 1996 sept-oct till end of 2000 he had hit 16 ODI centuries but after that he scored just 6 in the next seven years of his career...this speakes volumes of what toll captaincy took on his batting... similar stats would have been there had sachin or dravid been the captain for longer amount of time.. but some peple are born leaders and not all can do that...Dada is respected by one and all for this reason solely...check stats of each INDIAN captain... azhar, sachin, dravid during that age when ganguly played ... all of them struggled when given the captaincy...and to say that ganguly was never in the league of SRT, RD is a fool's comment and shows that you have no idea whatsoever about cricket... during 1996-2000 i would say he was in the same league as sachin matching him shot per shot or maybe even batter than sach, and stats for the period in ODIs proves me correct... its just that some people stood up for their nation and lead with example irrespective of their performance going down... :hatsoff: to DADA...

Yes it was 45. No some mighty 55+. http://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/player/28779.html?captain=0;class=1;filter=advanced;orderby=default;template=results;type=batting My argument is only about his test batting. As captain what he achieved for India is unmatchable.
