It's sad , spin in india was supposed to be the most potent weapon in their bowling artillery. Even though we dont have enough wrist spinners. History shows wrist spinners have been extremely successful, but india barring kumble/tendulkar had not had anyone and the aspirants don't show much confidence. I wish there is someone somewhere out there who can do this. [ame=

Kumble was not a wrist spinner.
To me he was, because his conventional leg break was generated by his wrists and not just fingers as is in the case of normal finger spinners.

He turned his googly more than leg break. He was more reliant on accuracy and variation in pace.

why do we always like to copy the weaker aspects of a bowler? kumble didnt spin the ball so no need to spin the ball' date=' kapil never bowled quick so no need to bowl quick .[/quote'] It is not the case. Spinning the ball does not come natural to every one like bowling quick does not come to every one. Spin bowling is literally fast bowling. Spinner too needs to put effort in bowling like fast bowlers. there are a few factors which affect spinning the ball. The biggest factor is hands and fingers, like Shane Warne who had bigger hands and thicker fingers to have right grip and give revolutions to the ball. How you complete your bowling action while delivering the ball also plays an important role after that.

spinning the ball is essential and one must look for guys who spin the ball ' date= specially since test pitches in india are flat and dont crumble in the first 3 days , but both fast bowlers and spin bowlers could be expensive since they look for pace/spin and hence can sometimes loose their accuracy and that is where the backing of the captain /team management/selectors come in.
that is why you need to have accuracy and variation more than spin on flat tracks because not many can spin the ball on flat pitches that is why they are called flat tracks.

I can recall India vs West Indies , West Indies bowler "Bishoo", looks fantastic, he doesnt have big hands or thicker fingers, but still he was miles ahead of mishra. I feel it's the action and the wrist motion put into the delivery, which imparts the turn.

read my second point which is about bowling action.

Indians have talent, but most of them lack work ethics, no matter how talented one is without proper practice no one can reach the level of Tendulkar, Dravid or Kumble. This is true in most other fields, not just cricket, I don't see Indians putting as much effort as they should, we are happy being mediocre.

Bishoo is a great find for WI. I remember Warne once saying that you need to have a quick rotation of shoulders but a slow release off the hand to rip the ball.Bishoo has that which is why he gets that zip off the pitch. Of the currrent crop, Piyush has potential but cannot impart side spin at all.

As Benaud said, you need to first work on your stock delivery till you can land it in the right areas consistently and variations come in later. Chawla doesn't even know what his stock delivery is.

Not sure at this juncture if it matters about wrist spinners. The spinners cupboard overall is lacking. It would be nice if someone like that Lyon kid or Bishoo was given a go in India - i.e. raw guys knowing their stock deliveries and allowed the freedom to attack in an upcoming series. Or maybe Mishra can rediscover his mojo, thing is his radar is very awry at the moment and we all know about the no-balls.
