No Hot Spot for India-England ODIs

Hot Spot will not be used for the upcoming ODI series between India and England, Warren Brennan, the chief executive of BBG Sports, the company behind the technology, has told ESPNcricinfo. Brennan admitted BBG Sports was disappointed with Hot Spot's performance during India's tour of England but also said he believed "it did not have BCCI's support" for the technology following that series. Brennan's statement suggests a reversal of the agreement reached between the BCCI and BBG in earlier in the year to use Hot Spot for India's home season, which also includes a scheduled full series against West Indies. During the Pataudi Trophy, Hot Spot had proved inconclusive during referrals of several appeals for caught-behind and was subsequently criticised by the BCCI. "BBG Sports is disappointed at how the Hot Spot performed in the UK during the England v India series. There were several incidents where we were hoping for better outcomes from the technology," Brennan told ESPNcricinfo in an e-mail. "Following the comments by Mr Srinivasan on September 20th in relation to Hot Spot and the DRS process, BBG Sports believed it did not have the support of the BCCI and promptly decided not to bring the Hot Spot to India for their upcoming home series." When contacted, the BCCI said it didn't want to comment on the issue. Upon taking over as BCCI president, N Srinivasan reverted to the board's original stance against the DRS following Hot Spot's performance on the England tour. In July this year, the BCCI had agreed to a compromise with the ICC wherein Hot Spot was made mandatory in the use of DRS while ball-tracking technology was made optional. "At the time, we were under the impression that Hot Spot was very good," Srinivasan had said after the BCCI's Annual General Meeting. "It is not necessary for me to dwell on the accuracy of Hot Spot, it was there for everybody to see. The BCCI will, at the next ICC meeting, raise the issue. We want to revisit it because we feel that Hot Spot is insufficient. We do not wish to use the DRS in its present form, even in its minimum standard." As he had done in an interview on ESPNcricinfo's fortnightly audio show Time Out in July, Brennan reiterated that Hot Spot was not 100% accurate, and needed support all around the sport to be keep improving. "BBG Sports has at no time stated that the Hot Spot is a perfect system," Brennan's email said. "In order to continue to improve the system, BBG Sports needs broadcasters, the ICC and cricket boards to support the Hot Spot and DRS process." At the start of what will be a packed cricket season, Brennan said BBG Sports was always trying to improve and expand the technology. He said he was confident of Hot Spot's "good use" in series outside of the subcontinent later in the year. "BBG Sports has continued to invest in Hot Spot technology and has purchased four new Hot Spot cameras in the past 6 months which we believe could improve the system dramatically," he said. "These new cameras will be put to good use for series in South Africa, New Zealand and Australia this southern summer."

England pleased with lengthy preparation

England's preparation for their second five-match ODI series against India in under a month will open with two practice matches against a Hyderbad squad, the BCCI has confirmed. England arrived in the city, which is the venue for the first ODI on October 14, on Tuesday and two day-night practice games will form part of their ten-day acclimatisation. The two practice matches will be held on October 8 and 11, with Hyderabad trying to rebuild after a poor 2010-11 Ranji Trophy season in the lower-division of the Indian domestic championship. The team to face England is expected to be selected on Thursday. A BCCI official said England could not face a Board President's XI or an India A team consisting of the highest rung of domestic cricketers because of the NKP Salve Challenger Trophy, a domestic 50-overs tournament featuring India's elite players. The tournament, featuring India's top 36 ODI players, will be held in Nagpur from October 10 to 13, with the players divided into three teams - India Blue, India Green and India Red. Gautam Gambhir, who is part of the Indian squad for the first two ODIs, will captain India Red. England underwent their first day of training in Hyderabad on Wednesday,a few players struggling in the 30-degree heat. England captian Alastair Cook was pleased with England's long warm-up period before the one-dayers. "It is quite unheard of as a one-day preparation period, to have 10 days," he said. "Normally, you come straight from a Test series. So to have that time is fantastic." England coach Andy Flower joins the England team on Thursday, after having undergone minor shoulder surgery and receiving his OBE during an Investiture ceremony at Windsor Castle. Wicketkeeper Craig Kieswetter is part of the Somerset squad taking part in the Champions League T20 and by Wednesday night will know whether his team will be part of the semi-finals or whether he will be making his way from Bangalore to Hyderabad.

Hotspot has been a piece of crap till now. There are hardly 1 or 2 such contentious decisions in the match. Even out of them, the really tough ones are not picked up by it (Dravid's one which he said he nicked yet HS didnt get it). The howlers are mostly picked up just by replays and the threshold of decisions where the nick is not clear yet Hotspot detects it is very low.. Hawkeye with improved accuracy has the potential to be the most useful technology in cricket.

No matter how good technology is BCCI will always say its not good enough even if its 110% accurate. To them technology is called only when it never gives Indian players out. UDRS means umpires refering the decision with little help from Hotspot and Hawkeye(coz inventers said its just 96%). There is no technology in the world with 100% completion everything just improving day by day.

Someone said something about the company applying a tit for tat policy. I would not like to fault the company prima facie coz the BCCI has been extremely verbal and public regarding its reservations on the technology and it was about time the company responded. However, I see disinterest in allaying Indian concerns by this company. Its almost like, "who are they to question are technology when no other country has a problem?" I think these people need to sit across the table and conclusively wrap up this discussion for good.

Should India go with 5 bowlers against England Honestly speaking, England Team might not dominate as it did in England. Having said that India has a new and fresh team with inexperience, it would be challenging. As batting was never a problem, India should go with 5 bowlers. This will not only give valuable exposure to our bowlers but also decrease pressure on individuals. Here is my bowling line-up in flat pitches PK umesh varon / VK Rahul Sharma Aswin Rahul sharma could be handy as he gets that bounce and could be used in slog overs. Infact, only chnace for him to get wickets would be, if batsmen go after him. Here is my bowling line-up on spinning tracks PK Umesh Varon / VK Ashwin R. Jadeja R. Jadeja has always been potent bowler in spinning tracks. And he would be handy with bat. We might need his help with bat on spinning tracks as batting lack exp as well. I don't think we have any pace tracks...
