ganeshran Posted September 15, 2011 Posted September 15, 2011 They don't have AT in diesel. :dontknow: I'm not sure where but I remember reading that in one of the Vietnamese cities, there is a law that states that if your office is within 7 km radius of your place of residence, you cannot drive to work. You either cycle or use public transport. It worked well for them. They've saved on a lot of petrol costs. I'm sure the local and foreign auto manufacturers mustn't be too happy. Nice rule. In US in a few companies they dont let you park in the company if you are driving alone. employees need to park a few kms away. Nice way to incentivize car pooling.
Clarke Posted September 16, 2011 Posted September 16, 2011 The value of oil in the US is determined by the West Texas Intermediate while the majority of the world follows Brent Crude, which is slightly higher but historically has been very close. My guess is taxes in India are much higher. Recall McCain's campaign stunt in 2008 suggesting removal of the gas tax, it would cut prices by 18 cents on a historic high of $4 per gallon. I bet our govt makes much more off petrol while discounting kerosene & maybe LPG.
master22 Posted September 16, 2011 Posted September 16, 2011 can anybody explain why is there such a huge difference in petrol prices among indian cities itself. In delhi it is 66/lt and in blore it is 76/lt.

Holysmoke Posted September 16, 2011 Posted September 16, 2011 This is damn sad. :(( :(( Recently bought an automatic :(( :girlcry:  Convert it to CNG:hysterical::hysterical::hysterical::hysterical::hysterical: Edit - I should not be laughing, I'm in the same situation :((
zombiePotato Posted September 16, 2011 Posted September 16, 2011 ^^ :idunno: I did 3 weeks back. I have started feelin like a millionaire already. :bhangra:
urbestfriend Posted September 16, 2011 Posted September 16, 2011 why its so expensive in India compare to USA...petrol is cheap there...so why its so expensive here. Because there is a tax in every level for petroleum products and what else is the best way to earn for government than petroleum products from common man?
urbestfriend Posted September 16, 2011 Posted September 16, 2011 Convert it to CNG:hysterical::hysterical::hysterical::hysterical::hysterical: Edit - I should not be laughing, I'm in the same situation :(( You guys are driving automatic :hehe: I'm also planning to buy an automatic :(( Need to rethink now.
Holysmoke Posted September 16, 2011 Posted September 16, 2011 You guys are driving automatic :hehe: I'm also planning to buy an automatic :(( Need to rethink now. Mine's not automatic.. its an electrically controlled manual transmission. Because there is a tax in every level for petroleum products and what else is the best way to earn for government than petroleum products from common man? Actually, you cannot convert big cars into cng. Most of them dont have the low end torque. I had thought of it years ago :(( Recently, I did some research into this. I needed a small car that had to do a lot of running around. 1. CNG is hard to find outside cities. 2. CNG is not thaaaaaaaat much cheaper. It's ~41 per kg, and tanks are generally 10kg. 3. It gives a mileage of around 15 per kg. 4. So your range is only 150 km as such. 5. It takes a long time to fill up, as there is quite a queue of taxis at all cng stations. 6. You still have to have petrol in your car, as the car starts on petrol, and then switches to cng. 7. Tank takes up lots of boot space (all of it for small cars) 8. Not as powerful as petrol/diesel cars. 9. Your per km cost is around rs 3, which is the same as diesel. Hence, I went for a diesel car.
ganeshran Posted September 16, 2011 Posted September 16, 2011 Holy, if you fit a CNG kit, cant you still use it with petrol or diesel? I thought there is a switching mechanism.
Holysmoke Posted September 16, 2011 Posted September 16, 2011 Holy' date=' if you fit a CNG kit, cant you still use it with petrol or diesel? I thought there is a switching mechanism.[/quote'] Ya, you can.. if you fit a cng kit on a petrol car. I dont think you can fit a cng kit on a diesel car. I mentioned it earlier. But why would you use petrol in on a cng car? doesnt it defeat the purpose?

Holysmoke Posted September 16, 2011 Posted September 16, 2011 If you run out of CNG with no bunk nearby yeah, it'll help so that you dont get stranded, but generally you wouldnt want to run a cng car on petrol other than when you have no other choice.
zombiePotato Posted September 16, 2011 Posted September 16, 2011 @holysmoke MY EXPERIMENT WITH CNG :hatsoff: 1. Agreed. but,U can switch to petrol for your trips outside the city. 2. It Rs 30 in Delhi Although the Cylinder capacity is 12 KG, they rarely fill it up with >9-10 KG. 3. Mine is giving me 18-19 with 70% AC normal traffic 4.170-180 KMs per refill. 5. One should consider the availability of CNG stations before converting. I have 3 Pumps in on my way from office. (2 within 1 KM radius of my house). Average time 10-15 mins. 6.Yes, but its optional. You have the option to start in CNG mode also. However, I drive the first KM in petrol, then switch to CNG as suggested by many users! :secret: 7.Yes, I had to compromise on the boot space. :headshake: 8. There is a <5% difference in pick-up, especially while moving from a standstill with AC on. 9. Per KM is INR 1.6 as opposed to 4 in petrol. It has been only 3 weeks since I am running on CNG. Found the lose of power irritating initially. But I am getting used to it and it feels great to save some $$$. + also it reduces the carbon emission or watevr. :--D
Shane Posted September 16, 2011 Posted September 16, 2011 :(( My fuel usage in the last few months has been increased to around Rs 7000 per month, my car averages 8-9 kmpl, travel roughly around 900 km every month.

There is a My bad, CNG is 32 out here in mumbai. What car have you converted to CNG?
The Outsider Posted September 16, 2011 Posted September 16, 2011 There is no free lunch - the government heavily subsidizes diesel in India. It's about Rs. 40/liter, while in the US it's more expensive than petrol at around $4/gallon, which would work out to something like Rs. 50/liter. Now, either you can take an increase in the price of petrol or of diesel, whose consumption is around 5 times higher than petrol in India which will result in a price increase across the board on all commodities. Even LPG and Kerosene, both of which are consumed as much as petrol in India are heavily subsidized by the government. 2. CNG is not thaaaaaaaat much cheaper. It's ~41 per kg, and tanks are generally 10kg. It's that expensive in Bombay? In Delhi, it's around the Rs.28-30/kg range.
