Tendulkar writes to ICC CEO Lorgat asking for changes in ODI format

The ODIs are perceived to be on the decline and it’s none other than Sachin Tendulkar who has now come out publicly in support of revamping the current 50—over format, having written a letter to ICC Chief Executive Haroon Lorgat. Tendulkar, the world’s highest run—getter in both Tests and ODIs, wants ICC to make “a radical switch” from 50—50 to four 25—over innings. Apart from reducing the number of overs per innings, Tendulkar has also proposed several more changes. The Indian batting icon had spoken about this new concept in television interviews in the past, but had never written a letter to ICC in this regard. “I have been capturing my thoughts on what I think would be the way forward to ensure that all three formats in the game co—exist and ensure value creation,” he wrote in the letter reported by ‘The Times’. He argued that four alternate innings of 25 overs for each side in an international would be the fairest way of balancing the advantages gained by the team that won the toss, when the pitch and weather conditions mean that a match can virtually be decided by the spin of a coin. Tendulkar’s letter also proposed changes in voluntary Powerplays. In each 25—over block, Tendulkar wants only two Powerplays at the behest of the batting side, but suggested that up to four bowlers should be allowed up to 12 overs each, rather than the present limit of 10. Tendulkar cited two games in the most recent World Cup when evening dew helped England to achieve a tie in their classic qualifying game against India in Bangalore, but then counted in favour of Ireland during their famous run chase against England at the same venue. A split into two equal innings a side was often proposed for the final of the domestic county competition in the UK - originally the Gillette Cup - in the days when it was invariably an advantage to field first, the report said. The hover cover, instant outfield drainage and sophisticated drying equipment have ensured that matches at Lord’s almost always start on a dry pitch these days, but that is not the case everywhere. In Australia last winter, the inter—state one—day tournament, the Ryobi Cup, was played over 45—overs—a—side, split into two alternate innings of 20 overs followed by two of 25. The format was generally rated a success by Cricket Australia (CA). There were more close finishes, more runs, more wickets and larger TV audiences. Significantly, the new regulations appeared to overcome the relatively dull and predictable middle—over phases of 50—over games.

I really hope something like this happens, current ODIs except for WC matches are so dull to watch. My idea would be - 4 x 20 over innings (so t20 strategy can also be seamlessly used n this format and there is not too much to get confused with) In each innings a bowler can bowl a max of 5 overs. (So no need for a 5th bowler and 7 batters can play) Powerplay in the first and last 5 overs of each innings. Simples. A great new and refreshed format.

No keep the ODIs as it is.I think the idea is pretty stupid,why call it a ODI then,call it 4 sets of 20-20 matches.Either keep the format as it is or scrap it alltogether.

25 over innings will be too short IMHO - it would be more like T20 games and that just cannot be done. But they've got to do something to reduce the importance of the toss.

I think batting PP has to be taken before 40th over n guys its not 2 T20s the number of wickets for whole 50 overs is 10

New Delhi: Monday was a busy day for the International Cricket Council (ICC). The body in it's chief executive meeting in Hong Kong made important changes to how the sport is being played which, apart from making a modified version of Decision Review System (DRS) mandatory, restricted the use of powerplays in ODIs to between the 16th and 40th over and chose to abolish runners. The ICC announced in a media release that the changes like not allowing runners and the use of powerplay only in the specified period, were brought in to further enhance the sport and the 50-over format. "Even though the success of 50-over cricket played during the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 was universally acknowledged, the Chief Executive Committee (CEC) rightly supported the enhancements recommended by the ICC Cricket Committee," said ICC Chief Executive Haroon Lorgat. In addition to the change in when a powerplay can be made use of in a match, the ICC also introduced the use of two new balls in an innings, one each from the two bowling ends. These decisions however will be implemented in matches that will be played from October 1, 2011. It was also decided upon by the CEC that a review of the maximum number of overs that a bowler can bowl, number of short-balls allowed per over, players allowed outside the inner circle during non-powerplay overs will be made. A decision recommending a qualifying process for the ICC Cricket World Cup in 2015 was also made though the CEC did not make any suggestions to the Executive Comittee on the number of teams that should be allowed to take part in the event, scheduled to be held in Australia and New Zealand. Test skippers would have to be extra cautious though as the CEC agreed on stricter sanctions against captains found guilty of breaching the over-rate.

I have seen this kind of format in Aus Ford Ranger Cup(Domestic ODIs),frankly I didnt find anything interesting in that.Dont know for others,but I do enjoy the passage of play in the middle overs in ODI cricket and if these kind of stupid changes are made then it woud take that aspect of the game out of one day cricket.

yes..25-over format was tried in Aus last year, but failed considerably.

I think it should be 80 over 20/20/20/20 test kirkut style. This way you can count the t20/20 and one day stats together and will be more regulated then having three different types of cricket.

If the problem is dew,then it could be solved by starting the match little bit early as they used to do in Pakistan when cricket used to be played there.

I dont like the 25 over innings idea, it will encourage more slogging rather than proper cricketing shots. However a new trial format of 2 innings 50 over games could be very interesting.

It is just one innings split into 25 overs each, so slog overs will remain the same - the last few overs.
