If Pujara is not fit, then by all means it should be Rahane. He is the only 1 who seems to be being technically adept. Kohli needs to tighten up his technique a little bit. Having said that, we also need to see how does Rahane perform on the Test arena. He played a lot across the line to my liking in such swinging conditions.
IN Australia, you need batsmen who can play well on the backfoot and Rahane is one of those guys who has a strong backfoot game that is the reason likes of Laxman and Sehwag have been successful there.

You never know what kind of conditions would be there in Australia. You remember the '99 series when Indians and Pakis had toured? Specially in our matches it used to be all overcast. It has not been the case in our previous 2 tours bus I read somewhere that even last year, the ball had swung much more than usual. And either ways, we can't carry people with loose techniques any more. Yuvraj Singh also has a good enough backfoot technique but he faltered because of feeling for the deliveries. I am not saying that Rahane is not the person for the role, just stated that he was playing a bit across the line which may end up being a problem.

Is Raina still a youngster??? Has played more than 100 ODIs and around 10 test matches. Has been in and out since 2005!! I would also like to see him score runs but he is not suited for test cricket. His technique and eye-flinching from the short pitch stuff would never let him score. And the way he looks to slog when he isn't able to come out of the jail is pathetic. You remember how he looked to slog Bresnan in the 3rd ODI, when the ball was seaming around, we were 58-4, he had more than 35 overs to play, he had his captain at the other end who was also looking to rebuild the innings? That's what he tries to overcome his problems against short pitch stuff. He would be squealed in Australia in tests.

what are the other options if Pujara is not fit? There's Rahane - he's one with huge potential and looks like he would succeed in Tests but he's yet to play a Test match and bats up the order so I don't think selectors will pick him. There's Yuvi - do you really want to take him after what happened to him last time he toured Australia!!! There's Rohit Sharma - much as I would like him to be selected, selectors have so far not shown confidence in him for Test level so I don't think he will be selected for such an important tour. There's Kohli but I still have some doubts over his technique. Raina has had a very good ODI series in England and before the Australia series there are only ODIs to be played and if he does well there also then I would certainly pick him.

If Pujara is not fit, I would rather thrown in someone who seems to be having a good enough technique like Rahane. It's much much better than having someone like Raina about whom the whole world knows there's a weakness and who would chicken out by looking to slog. Rahane is an unknown quantity so the Aussies would not be having much idea about him. But that does not mean that I am trying to say that he would succeed there. Who knows we might come up with a few chinks in his game as well :--D

Agree there but ultimately you have to remember that Indian selectors hardly choose newcomers for such important series'. If they do this time then it would be a welcome change.

no ..Yuvraaj does not have good backfoot game. He is uncomfortable whenever ball is pitches short and bouncing at throat height so he stays on backfoot and then does not come on to front foot and the pitched up ball takes him. The thing is if a batsman as good backfoot game, he can play on front foot as he can get back when ever ball is pitched short. It is not necessary you pull or hook in tests, you can leave and that comes when batsman is sure about how he can get back from front foot, shifting from front foot to back foot is important.
