speed_demon Posted September 27, 2011 Posted September 27, 2011 New Delhi: The 2011 Champions League competition seems to have generated its first controversy as teams have objected to the rule change which has increased the availability of overseas men for Mumbai Indians because of injury to a number of their players, sources have told CNN-IBN. Mumbai can now field five foreigners while the other teams are allowed just four. The exception was made as eight players in the Mumbai squad were injured. Sources added that other teams feel that the exception should have been made for everyone; "If Mumbai had seven fit players, why werenÃÕ they all fielded?" The issue has already been raised with the CLT20 organising committee. Mumbai Indians were allowed to field five overseas players after Sachin Tendulkar, Rohit Sharma, Munaf Patel, Suryakumar Yadav, Dhawal Kulkarni, Aditya Tare and Pawan Suyal weren ruled out of the tournament due to injuries. In their places the Mumbai team nominated Andrew Symonds, Dilhara Fernando, R Sathish, Sarul Kanwar and Abu Nechim Ahmed. The tournament organisers in a statement issued on September 22 said: "In the current circumstances, if the Mumbai Indians suffer one more injury to an Indian player, they will be unable to field a team due to CLT20 rules restricting teams to a maximum of four overseas players in any one match. As a result, the CLT20 Governing Council has approved a recommendation by the Technical Committee to ensure the Mumbai Indians will be permitted to select up to five overseas players in any one team, provided those players were contracted to play in the 2011 IPL." It added that this ruling, which has now been objected to by the other teams, will also be applicable to any other team if they suffer injuries like the Mumbai Indians have suffered, which compromises their participation in the event.

There is news report on HT today which says that one of their player Surya KumarYadav who was reportedly said to be "injured",was playing in a domestic tournament yesterday..This is why I feel this tournament is becoming a joke and what I can say about MI management.

Yadav's omission from the MI squad on September 22 had left them with seven Indian players, which prompted their request for an additional overseas player for the tournament and resulted in theirs being the only team allowed to field five foreign players in the final XI. Yadav was captaining the Chandrakant Pandit XI against Dilip Vengsarkar XI in a three-day match of the Shalini Bhalekar Trophy; on Wednesday he had fielded the entire day and bowled 6.3 overs as well, according to Hindustan Times. The paper also reported that he'd had surgery on an injured finger, which was the reason for his being withdrawn from the Mumbai Indians squad. "As soon as we heard he was available, we picked him for this tournament," Yadav's team coach Deepak Patil told ESPNcricinfo. "We wouldn't play an unfit player. Our selectors had assessed and approved his fitness, and picked him to play." Yadav was one of six Indian players to be ruled out of MI's CLT20 campaign, along with Sachin Tendulkar, Rohit Sharma, Munaf Patel, Ali Murtaza and Dhawal Kulkarni. In addition to those six injured players, the CLT20 technical committee had announced that they had also received medical reports ruling out two more Mumbai players - Aditya Tare and Pawan Suyal - from the tournament. That left eight out of Mumbai's 23 contracted players unavailable for selection. It also meant the final 14-member squad had an equal number of Indian and overseas players, without a buffer to handle any potential injury to an Indian player. The organisers then allowed Mumbai to field five overseas cricketers in their playing XI, though other other IPL sides continued to be limited to four. This wont help MI either.
