Cutting the hands may not be in literal sense. It could be - not allowing them to work anywhere else - which is as good/bad as cutting hands of an artisan/labor. Another example of use of such words comes in Ramayana - apparently Laxman cut Suparnkha's nose - and is shown literally in TV picturization - whereas we all know what is the meaning of "naak kaat dena" in Indian culture.

akshayxyz Posted October 11, 2011 Posted October 11, 2011 As for who built Taj - it should be fairly easy to carbon-date the various samples from Taj. Also, 4-500 years is not too distant past. Alternative theories/text's can survive this period, even via word-to-mouth stories.

But it does seem out of place for a mausoleum to have so many rooms and a music house. I haven't seen it. I don't know if he cut the hands of the workers (haven't read anything on that). But he was a tharki no doubt .He had an incestuous relationship with his own daughter Jahan-Ara ,not to mention the countless concubines in his Harems .Besides he was high on opium all day :) Good life to have , no ? :)

I wish I cud see it 300 years ago. Agra fort was much fun IMO. Within next 1 month, of seeing taj, I visited all other old monuments including red fort, qutub minar, purana qila, tuglakabad fort, safdarjung tomb..
