After a long time we are seeing the reginalism and favouratism back in indian team. The non deserving players from Karnataka TN etc are getting in.Someone needs to say this on the face of the selectors.

Agree with regards to Karnataka as the likes of Mithun and Vinay should not be anywhere near the test team. With regards to TN, i don't think it really applies. The only possible player who did not deserve to be in the national team was Vijay but he actually looked a decent bat to begin with and showed early promise before he seemed to lose his technique. The only other case of favouritism came with with the selection of Srikkanth JR on that emerging players tour (or whatever it was) in Australia a few months back.

Rahane and Mukund were contenders for the openers slot but Mukund from S Zone got his chance first on the WI tour. Whenever there is a toss up between 2 newish players Srikanth always selects the SZ man. Badri, Vijay, Vinay and Mithun are prime examples. Now there are quite a few excellent S Zone players and they should get a chance but Srikanth has brought back regionalism big time .

Having said all that, the Indian squad is full of players from the North and West. Any given team has a maximum of one South Indian player. Mukund and Badri deserved their chances as they scored truckloads of runs in domestic cricket. Vijay is genuinely talented and will do well to get some consistency. The love-affair with Vinay Kumar will end soon too (hopefully), but I am still shocked that they ignored Dinda for the CB series.

The point is ---- Rahane had scored even more runs in domestic cricket than Mukund when he was omitted and Mukund selected. Plus Rahane is the better backfoot player among the 2 and that is one of the factors generally considered while choosing a batsman for an overseas tour. Yet Mukund it was. Mukund also definitely deserves a chance but not before Rahane and that is where regionalism crept in. There was a time when our bowling attack consisted of bowlers mainly from the South --- Srinath, Prasad, Kumble and Joshi. Nobody grudged it because they were the best bowlers available in our country at that time. That is how it should be.... choose the best players for the country whether they are all from one zone or from different places.

I didn't really follow that series but what I gather is Mukund was in tremendous form in that season (with an average of 75 in the last 18 games), which might have given him the edge. Also, the thinktank might have preferred a leftie-rightie combination at the top. Also, since Rahane is not an opener he's hardly competing for that slot.

Rahane started as an opener and was batting at nr 3 as an adjustment to suit the team's needs.

yes but when he was selected he established himself at no 3 and was very succesful i dont care abt batters being dropped now most of these seniors are going so they will get htere share of matches specially people like rahane hope they dont select raina again!

Raina and Yuvraj are not good enough to play tests unless they can correct their flaws and develop test mentality. But sadly, being experienced ODI players, may get selected if the big 3 retire.

Mark my words - Raina will make a comeback and kick everyone's asses. He did make a debut century, and scored a quickfire 40 at the right time to help India win a Test in Lanka. He also played very well in the Windies. It's just a matter of time when he'll be back in full glory. Rahane has unfortunately only gone downhill since that sparkling debut in the T20 match. Now even Tiwari has replaced him in the ODIs. He'll come back though, and hopefully fulfill his promise.

For Raina to make an effective comeback in tests he needs to improve his technique against the short ball and also get a better idea where his off stump is. He should also quit thinking like an ODI player while playing tests.
