J P K Posted August 23, 2011 Posted August 23, 2011 Mumbai batsman Ajinkya Rahane has finally been rewarded for some heavyscoring seasons in Ranji Trophy and a good outing in the recent Emerging Players Tournament in Australia as he was picked for the one-day series and the one-off T20 in England. Vireder Sehwag was ruled out of the remainder of the tour due to 'labyrinthithis' in the left ear due to which he has regular headaches. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Monday named the 23-year-old Rahane, who has 4,673 first-class runs at a superb average of 67.72, as the replacement and the Mumbai batsman is confident of doing well in English conditions. "I am thankful to the selectors for picking me. I feel this is a reward for my hard work in the Ranji Trophy and the Indian Premier League (IPL). I have been waiting for a chance and now that I have got it, I need to put in double the effort," Rahane told Mail Today. With Sehwag out of the picture and Gautam Gambhir indisposed at the moment, owing to the concussion on the head he received while attempting a catch in The Oval Test, there aren't many options to fall back upon when it comes to opening. Sachin Tendulkar will be at the top and apart from Rahul Dravid, who was the default opener in the Test series, there are very few names when it comes to facing the new ball. Rahane, on his part, is willing to take the responsibility of opening if he is asked to. "I have been picked to play for India and will bat at any position that I am asked to. I have been a No. 3 batsman for Mumbai and have opened as well. In fact, in the Emerging Players Tournament, I scored a century opening and one at No. 3. So if I am asked to open, I am confident of doing well," he said. In the three three-day games in the Emerging series, Rahane had scores of 8, 109, 45*, 12 and 100. It's these performances that seem to have sealed the deal in his favour. Rahane has rubbed shoulders with Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid in the IPL and considers them his idols. "They said that I should bat exactly the way I had been and I would be rewarded eventually." The Mumbai batsman also said that he has some idea about the conditions in England. "I was part of the India A team that went to England last year. However, international cricket is totally different. But I will still try to keep few things from that tour in mind." Rahane said that his good showing over the seasons has finally reaped dividends. "I have been doing well in Ranji Trophy. I did well in the IPL and also in the Emerging series. So it has been a mixture of all three that had helped me," he said. NareshK Posted August 23, 2011 Posted August 23, 2011 The important question is does he have the technique to play the short ball and when the ball moves around ? Only those batsmen can do well in foreign conditions.

Yoda-esque Posted October 25, 2011 Posted October 25, 2011 I think he had a better SR in England.The ball comes on faster for him to play those cuts and pulls.Hes a better backfoot player than a front foot one and is required on OZ-SA pitches. Hes not a great driver suprisingly, which is what you need to be on Indian pitches.

saneindian Posted October 25, 2011 Posted October 25, 2011 He is doing fine. A SR of 76 with an avg of 33 is good enough for a young batsman finding his feet in international cricket. The only real disappointment has been that he hasnt kicked on to convert one of his starts to a 100. But big scores are surely not too far away and once he hits a 100, we could see him piling on the runs.

As I said if you want to find a fault , it will be that he didnt kick on. Also put the knock into perspective considering the quality of bowling by Finn and Bresnan early on. if you watched it live,you wopuldn't be cribbing about the SR.

Pagalpanti Posted October 25, 2011 Posted October 25, 2011 I think its just the pressure, he seems to be trying to stay on the crease for more time rather than playing naturally. In England he was totally fearless, played shots and took on the bowlers. He looked quite defensive in this series.
express bowling Posted October 25, 2011 Posted October 25, 2011 Rahane seems to have a lot of time to play fast bowling and is good on the front foot as well as off the back foot. This is such a big plus, especially outside the subcontinent, that I would keep him in the team. Plus he is a genuine stroke player of faster bowling. He needs to rotate the strike a bit more. This would push his strike rate up and allow him to avoid the occasional outrageous shots that he plays out of desperation when he gets bogged down. Also, he needs to learn to keep the hook/ pull shots down rather than always playing them in the air.
