achilles Posted November 7, 2011 Posted November 7, 2011 Say whateva you want but u gotta appreciate that Russians stood by us through thick and thin in our worst times.. It was cuz of them China and US didn't enter in 1971 war... as a matter of fact' date=' I recently read some interesting story where China initially decided that they wud put an army on their borders if we were to go in a war with Pakistan in 1971.. thats when [b']Russians said, if u Chinese try to intervene Indian territory and support Pakistan, it will be an all out war from Russians through Russian Chinese border... Thats when China jus went mum and totally cut themself off the war(other then providing weapons)... Russia might have their own motives but now reading some articles from 1965-1971 wars, I realize it wasn't for them, India would have lost big time by combined forces of China-Pakistan... Is there a source validating this?
Tiger80 Posted November 7, 2011 Posted November 7, 2011 Is there a source validating this? Americans returned and couldn't do anything. Soviet Union had also threatened China that, if they ever opened a front against India on its border, they will receive a tough response from North. http://www.theworldreporter.com/2011/10/1971-india-pakistan-war-role-of-russia.html

Rajiv Posted November 7, 2011 Posted November 7, 2011 Americans returned and couldn't do anything. Soviet Union had also threatened China that, if they ever opened a front against India on its border, they will receive a tough response from North. The war ended with the surrender of Pakistani army as they missed American help due to quick Russians who blocked both America and China from preventing India to advance. With this, a new country named Bangladesh was formed, which was recognized by the whole world and by Pakistan next year on Shimla Agreement. achilles Posted November 7, 2011 Posted November 7, 2011 Brilliant article and video. Russia tackled not 1, not 2, but 3 potential enemies. Ruskies showed what true friendship means. Its a bit of a shame that we have let populist sentiments override this friendship.

ganeshran Posted November 7, 2011 Posted November 7, 2011 The erstwhile USSR is not equal to Russia. Our foreign policy which exsited with USSR cannot be replicated with Russia because it cant match up with the USA in military or economic terms. Its quite natural that we leaning towards the US now.

Russia might have their own motives but now reading some articles from 1965-1971 wars, I realize it wasn't for them, India would have lost big time by combined forces of China-Pakistan...[/quote'] If you want to hear the entire story here goes: a) Before the start of the 1971 war Indira Gandhi had toured Europe, including UK and France and impressed upon the reason(s) why India would have to defend itself against Pakistan in case of an attack. Her overtures were taken note of and most European countries agreed to keep off. b) US was thus isolated amongst the NATO forces and much as it supported Pakistan, militarily and ideologocially, they did not want the war to be initiated. And when Pakistan did initiate the war, US was pi$$ed off if anything. c) Indira Gandhi was able to deal with Chinese and although this part is murky, not too much account has been heard about this, Chinese did not interfere in the war. d) When India start hitting Pakistan on both front, US tried to bluff by moving couple of its warships in Bay of Bengal. Perhaps as a bluff, perhaps as a real threat. Soviet Union moved its own warships in Bay of Bengal and trailed the US ships for a week. US backed off and India routed Pakistan. :hatsoff::hatsoff: to Indira Gandhi of course

Sarkar Posted November 7, 2011 Posted November 7, 2011 ^ I remember seeing that interview on Youtube. fKiQboyDMUo nRAfs_LPFI4 Big Salute to mrs gandhi the lady with lots of guts and bravery
Lurker Posted November 7, 2011 Posted November 7, 2011 Big Salute to mrs gandhi the lady with lots of guts and bravery Yep. She made a couple of big mistakes, supporting extremists in Punjab to overcome Akalis & Emergency. Those are huge blots on her resume but aside from that she did great. In the era that she led India, we were recognized as a no-nonsense nation. Still remember how she kept Margaret Thatcher waiting to prove a point..imagine Manmohan Singh or Narsimha Rao doing it.
gs Posted November 7, 2011 Posted November 7, 2011 I am not a fan of Congress, but absolutely admire Indira's handling of 1971 crisis!

Tiger80 Posted November 7, 2011 Posted November 7, 2011 Here is my question what did we gain from 1971 war? We did not get an inch of land ,BD has now good relation with pak.The only winner of 1971 war were BD muslims who did even keep their promise to make Bd a secular country
