No bowler in the history of Test cricket who has taken 200 wkts or more has a strike rate of less than 40. He is the greatest bowler in the history of Test cricket that too iin an era of flat pitches , better quality bats and batsmen friendly rules,

no flat pitches in south africa dude esp. for tests.... dint u see the one at newlands and durban has always been famous for its bounce and swing...

I seriously rate him higher than the overrated Holdings etc.........
IMO, in terms of test cricket, he is one of the top 5 fast bowlers ever to have played test cricket.

There can be a tie between Lillie and Ambrose for 4th place. I have seen devastating spell videos of both Lillie and Ambrose. Ambrose at Perth and Lillie against World XI in 1971 that was some serious pace.

Actually, I looked at your list again. You have presented a very interesting one. You have rated Glenn McGrath above Marshall.That is a pretty big thing to say IMO. McGrath was a consistent and one of the greatest one's for sure but Marshall was in a completely different league. Also, you have included Steyn at the expense of Donald. Its worth a discussion :two_thumbs_up:

Mcgrath is top bowler. There are misconceptions about that he just bowled line and length and he did not have many skills and he just played with patience of the batsmen, but IMO he was extremely skillful and could seam the ball both ways. He was the one bowler who could move the ball both ways from a same spot and that is how he deceived a lot of batsmen. He got slower later but if you watch his old bowling in early to mid 90s, he was pretty quick too. Mcgrath stands out because he is the one bowler who will never let down a captain and his sole absence could make a difference of win and loss to Australia which we saw in Ashes 200 as in the tests, he played Australia won, but whenever he got injured and did not play, the same team lost despite the huge performance by Shane Warne. I have chosen Steyn ahead of Donald is because Dale Styen is a kind of bowler who has that out swing which no one can ball as viciously as him at some good pace. Donald was good too, but if we have to choose 5 names, I will pick Styen ahead of Donald. Donald was more nasty and fiery as a bowler, but Steyn is in another league.

Yes, I for myself have beleived that McGrath had great skills as a bowler. He could seam the ball both ways, and at a brisk pace. Still I am not 100% convinced to have him above Marshall. He was perhaps as consistent as him, an ability to move the ball both ways and at a brisker pace. Also, Mcgrath's bouncer were always well-directed while Marshall's bouncers were more menacing.That's my opinion though. Also, as per Steyn, i would still wait and watch before I would place him in the ATG list. His numbers and all are mind-blasting but, it has been still a period of 3-4 years. Most of the bowlers, including Donald have been succesful for a period of 4-5 years, but it's also about how you develop as a fast bowler. If you see the other names, Wasim Akram had a dream run from late 80's to mid-90's. He averaged somewhere around 21-22 for some7-8 years. This is the reason I wanted to have Ambrose in place of Steyn as of now. Ambrose also had a longer longevity as a great fast bowler. He really started fading away after 2000. I have not seen much of Lillee so I am not very sure about him.

Why I see Styen sustaining his wicket taking ability for long is because Styen is not all about pace. He is about swing and he has that great action that allows him to swing the new ball away most of the time and IMO, out swinger is the most potent way of taking wickets consistently. I have not seen Marshall barring the videos and based on those videos I put him at 2. Maybe, I would tempted to put Ambrose in place of Lillie and Richard can certainly come into contention as well.

I haven't seen anything of Marshall but of all the fast bowler's i have seen, McGrath is the greatest. Did any batsman clearly get the better of McGrath in his career?

We should have more comparison threads between bowlers. I'm sick of the same batsmen related ones.
Agree. Oldies of ICF should start these discussions who know about fast bowlers more.
