I am moving to: KEPLER 22 B Speaking at a press conference at the NASA Ames Research Center, near Mountain View, California, Kepler's home base, astronomers announced this week that they'd found a brand-new planet, somewhat bigger than Earth, orbiting a Sun-like star about 600 light-years from Earth. The world now known as Kepler 22b is, said mission chief scientist, Bill Borucki, "Kepler's first habitable-zone planet around a Sun-like star." On a side, the study to find if there is an atmosphere there is already underway. But those kind of things take time as they literally depend on the stars aligning.

Isn't Jupiter's diameter more like 10x the earth's?

This isnt necessarily true. You could very well have a species which thrives at 100 degree Celsius and breathes something other than oxygen

It doesn't mean other forms of life yet unknown to us don't exist. Just that we wouldn't know of a way to look for them unless we know what they are.

Isn't Jupiter's diameter more like 10x the earth's?[/quote'] jupiter is way bigger than earth. i was thinking the new planet might be a gaseous planeteven if it was a rocky planet the gravity will be 2.5 times that of the earth right?.this is still a great endevour even if we have no way of travelling there (YET)

The only assumption made is that where ever and whatever life is they would use EM to communicate as that's the only long range communication force known to us which we understand to a large degree.

I think he is referring to environment conducive to existence of life as in heat, oxygen, water etc, which is what we seem to be looking for to determine if life could have existed or can currently exist in another planet, not necessarily medium of communication.
