1983-2011 Posted December 26, 2011 Posted December 26, 2011 Murder inquiry launched after Lancaster University student from India shot in the head in early hours of Boxing Day Police in Greater Manchester say there was no "obvious motive" behind the fatal shooting on Boxing Day of a student who was visiting Salford for Christmas. The 23-year-old from India, who was studying at Lancaster University, died after he was shot in the head at close range in the early hours. Officers have appealed for witnesses to come forward with information about the "awful attack". The victim, who has not yet been named, was with nine fellow Indian students at the time of the incident. His parents, who live in India, have been informed of his death. Greater Manchester police said the group was heading towards Manchester city centre when two men approached and engaged the victim in a "very short" conversation. Moments later the killer pulled out a weapon and shot the student, who collapsed to the ground as his killer ran off towards the Ordsall estate. There is nothing in witness statements to suggest the attack was a robbery or racially motivated or that the students knew the two men. Chief Superintendent Kevin Mulligan said: "The family have been made aware of what has occurred and this tragic set of circumstances. There is going to be a huge amount of concern in the community and I can reassure the family and the community by telling them we have launched a major investigation and no stone will be unturned so we can find the people who are responsible for this. "We are only going to solve this with the help of the community. We need witnesses to come forward who were there at the time of these events and who may have seen these people running away. "If it was your brother, son, husband or friend who was killed while visiting another city you would want justice, so please help us do the same. Sadly, there are still people out there with access to guns and as this tragic incident shows, it takes just a second for someone with a gun to deprive a family of a loved one." The officer, who is divisional commander for Salford, urged the killer and his accomplice to turn themselves in. "You need to surrender yourselves to the police as soon as possible. This was an awful attack which appeared to be unprovoked on a young student who was just going about his business." The murder took place a few hundred yards from the Wellington pub, where there was a fatal shooting in September, but Mulligan said there was no connection between the two killings at this stage. He added: "There is bound to be anxiety in the community about this but we have got an increased police presence in the area, we have got a thorough investigation going on and we have done a huge amount to bring down crime in the area. "I don't want to detract from the seriousness of this incident but violent crime in the city is down overall and it seems rather crass to discuss that at this point but it's important to say that, generally, Salford and Manchester are safe places to be." Police are looking after the other students until they return to Lancaster. The university said : "Lancaster University can confirm that the man killed in Salford early this morning is a 23-year-old Indian postgraduate student, who was studying micro-electronics. Utalk Posted December 26, 2011 Posted December 26, 2011 Horrific crime. Ordsall estate is full of idiots. I have just driven past the crime scene and the whole area is cordoned off. May the victim RIP and parents cope with this tragic incident.
Serani Posted December 26, 2011 Posted December 26, 2011 Salford is a **** hole, finished work at 1 AM once and public transport had stopped so decided to walk home and felt pretty unsafe in Salford after taking a wrong turn, the place looks like a bomb has hit it.

These types of incidents really make you think, just on Friday I went for end of work year drinks with my collegues close to our office in London and some youths (white English) were abusing some of my friends and I gave it back to them! I am never one to back down verbally although I aam not a fighter and never will be, but after hearing about this I have promised my parents that no matter what I will walk away no matter what is said to me or my friends, because sadly you cannot be sure who you are talking to or what they have on them. RIP to the kid and my thoughts and prayers are with his family.

Utalk Posted December 28, 2011 Posted December 28, 2011 Two Irish guys were robbed and beaten by black youths yesterday near there. They were walking back to the city centre after watching Utd. Salford Quays is a tourist attraction and with Media city moving there you get lot of visitors. It's also 2 mins away from old Trafford football ground. People need to avoid walking in the area esp at night time. I use to work at a car showroom in Salford and had a break in once. They took my laptop.

British police are offering a reward of of nearly $78,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the killer of an Indian student. Anuj Bidve, 23, was shot in the head at close range in the northern English city of Salford on Monday. "It is an extremely unusual, savage and motiveless attack, an absolutely horrific crime, which is why we are taking the step of issuing it [the reward] a bit earlier than we normally would," Detective Chief Superintendent Mary Doyle said. "We absolutely understand the need to take whoever is responsible for this off the streets." The microelectronics student was with a group of friends when he was shot after a brief conversation with a man who approached them. Police say they are treating the murder as a hate crime which may have been racially motivated. Arrests A 16-year-old boy and two 17-year-old boys arrested over the murder have been released on bail pending further inquiries. Two men, aged 19 and 20, remain in custody. Police have yet to find the murder weapon, believed to be a small handgun. According to a Facebook page set up in Bidve's memory, he "was killed for not answering a simple question - 'What's the time?'". But police have not yet disclosed what was said between the killer and his victim. Bidve, from the western Indian city of Pune, was studying at nearby Lancaster University and had been on a short break in Manchester with eight Indian friends when he was shot. Police said the students were walking from their hotel towards the city centre when they became aware of two men on the other side of the street. A white male walked across the road and after a brief conversation with the victim produced a gun and shot him at close range, before running off. The area itself is quite rough and being from India the group probably looked more vulnerable and foreign. I am not saying they wouldn't have attacked a British Indian e.t.c but this group seemed a more likely target. Bit like the Indian guy stabbed in Scotland who was training for his navy exams few years ago. Foreign indian students need to hang around with British Indians who know a bit more about how to avoid this in various ways. Senseless attack and hope the guy responsible goes down for a long time. Things like this should carry a possible death penalty.

To be honest bro, I am British Indian as in born here but to Indian parents but I would have felt just as vulnerable in that situation perhaps although it is hard to say but as someone said earlier that can be a very notorious area. I agree my heart goes out to the family it is tragic and I hope the bastards are brought to justice
