There is no road map' date='Its up to sachin when he decides his time is up and we should trust him with that .But with another poor series push will come from ext sources.[/quote'] Why should a player "decide" when he should retire? It's not his personal fiefdom, it's India's national team we are talking about. He can play all he wants and "decide" when he wants to quit from Mumbai's IPL team but sorry, he can't do so for the national team. Steve Waugh never got that luxury, neither did Healy who didn't even get to play the last farewell game at his home. By allowing Sachin to decide whenhe should retire we are admitting individuals are bigger than the game and if so nothing much has changed in India over the years and this signifies why we have always under-achieved at intl level. First we had to carry Kapil in the team to the team's detriment so that he could be the world's highest wicket taker with a young and much better pacer in Srinath wasting his time on the bench, and now we have SRT and other 2 retirees in Dravid & Laxman continue playing when they are clearly past it. I don't trust a player to call it a day and that's why you have selectors and I expect the selectors to do their job and safeguard interests of the team over an individual's. Bu of course it's too much to expect from Indian selectors and board who are all in violation of conflict of interest ethic themselves.

I hope others have a better response than that. As for you, he has already used his legacy and goodwill to cash that blank check. Aint gonna happen that Team India is going to carry him till Kingdom come. But thanks for proving the point, that his supporters have hardly any faith in him aside asking for a blank check.

Thats the natural progression. Even a Virat Kohli of today faces more media scrutiny than Sachin did when Sachin was Virat's age. There is nothing new here.
One thing may be in SRT's favor is that he is a quiet guy and the media generally likes him. Not necessarily with Gavaskar as he was caustic at times!

To be fair its high time we gave up on criticising media, and learn to criticize the players when need be. The media thing cuts both ways. If they are nosey they have also made these aholes demi-gods. A total loser like Irfan Pathan, who has not played an International Game in three years, mentions to Cricinfo that he doesnt have a life in India, and loves in Australia. To be honest I do not begrudge IP. Heck if I was his age and had girls throwing themselves at my feet, making easy millions etc, why would I be any different? My issue is when the fans, and the journalists (like OP) decide to make these demi-gods are someone who have been a victim. "Stop expecting IP to take 5 wickets every time he goes to bowl, or 100 runs...he is not a Kapil Dev". Effer isnt a Manoj Prabhakar let alone Kapil Dev. Same with Sachin, every boy till 80 year old man waits for his century and wears him down? Dude really?

Exaggerate? Yes Made a point? Dont think so. Except for the Sachin-fans, then again for them the point was already made, isnt it? :winky:

Lurker, you keep going around in circles making the same point over and over again when it comes to SRT. Yes, it is a player's prerogative to decide when he retires and not the selectors. the selectors are picking him in ODIs because he is still among the best batsmen in the country and there is already enough youth in the team. That the test team needs change is pretty obvious, but we are not going to force all three senior batsmen at the same time creating a void in the middle order. VVS will be asked to leave immediately, RD maybe after a farewell series. SRT will retire sometime next year and by that time the other positions would have stabilized.

This Sachin retirement/anti-retirement saga is getting so stale and nauseating that every thread on this makes me :asleep: New topics, peepal! P.S. Will the legendary DE take a 5-er on Sunday to celebrate a belated birthday? :woot:

Not really. In my opinion it is NOT a player's prerogative to decide when he retires. If that is indeed the case how does a cricket board, or cricket team, ever decide a road-map for itself?

So the same question to you Ganesh. What is going to be the acceptable timeline for you for Sachin? 20 tests? 40 tests? 100 more tests??? Give me something here that I can atleast get an idea on where your thoughts are, dont ask for a blank check...or worse let it be dependent on Sachin.

The selectors can choose not to pick a player he isnt good enough. They have no right to tell a player to retire. The reason SRT is playing in both ODIs and tests is because he still among the best batsmen in the country. If selectors disagree, then dont pick him. Simple. Of course if you are going to drop him, then inform that you are going to drop you and you might want to take a call on your career as a courtesy sake. But if the player refuses then drop him I already said what the timeline should be in my previous post. He will retire next year so by the time the other two positions would have been (hopefully) claimed by the new batsmen. Its obvious that selectors dont want a completely rookie middle order

Wow! So not only does he choke' date='[b'] he also makes excuses :doh:
abey sharam kar... you could have questioned his decision, but calling it an excuse is pathetic. especially coming from someone who claims to know the basics of discipline/commitment.. and questioning someone who is mai-baap of your mai-baaps in those terms.
Dude you are a top class player now intp 25 year of cricket, if you know whats the scenario deal with it. Quit justifying your failure.
that's how he said he planned to deal with it! - 'failure' was in hindsight. It was very much possible he could have played out Clarke and hit from other end - going by the way he was playing until then.

Waugh played a match saving knock in his last innings and i doubt SRT can do so. But if a farewell series is all that matters let's have that against NZ later this year and get it out of the way.
