Ultimate_Game Posted February 29, 2012 Posted February 29, 2012 One glaring weakness that we have other than the no. 7 spot is lack of death bowlers. We have been exposed at the death in tri-series when we have been forced to bowl likes of Virat Kohli and Raina at the death. In Asia Cup and on flat pattas this shortcoming will be exposed even more. All our bowlers (mostly pace) - PK, Vinay Kumar, Zaheer, Irfan etc. - generally bowl well in the first spell but are slaughtered later on with the team sometimes leaking 90-100 runs in the last 10 overs. Malinga may have been taken apart in the last match but he generally is extremely reliable at the death and can bowl yorkers at the death. It took a very special knock from Virat to do what he did against Malinga but the fact remains we don't have anyone who can either bowl yorkers consistently or make run scoring difficult in the end overs. India needs to identify bowlers who can be our go to bowlers at the death and power plays. On turning tracks in sub-continent Ashwin can do the job but we need a couple of pacers as well who can be relied upon to do so. The last half-decent fast bowler who could do so for us was Nehra who at least managed to bowl a few yorkers but other than that our bowlers generally have been lambs at slaughterhouse in slog overs. Hope Dinda or someone else surprises me in Asia Cup
vvvslaxman Posted February 29, 2012 Posted February 29, 2012 We need to find our own Dernbach. What a slower he bowled to Misba.
Ultimate_Game Posted February 29, 2012 Author Posted February 29, 2012 We need to find our own Dernbach. What a slower he bowled to Misba. And we have PK trying to bowl slower balls  I mean how do you fool a batsman by bowling a slower ball when your stock ball is 120 kph which in itself is slower than most fast bowlers' slower one It's not just about slower bowlers, it's about control and brains as well. You need to have the ability to bowl a yorker, a bouncer, slower ball, mix up line & length etc., and most importantly you need to figure out what needs to be done depending on the batsman. E.g., a batsman who doesn't play pre-mediated shots is unlikely to fall to a slower one. A batsman who is good at hooking or pulling should not be fed a bouncer etc. IMO we lack in control (especially at bowling yorkers) and brain part (other than Zaheer). As Ian Chappell rightly said of Umesh when he was taken apart as usual in one of the games "he bowled a slower ball not because he had to, but just because he hadn't bowled one for a long time".
bajrang Posted February 29, 2012 Posted February 29, 2012 maybe we need to look beyond the seamers . we have two of the most economical bowlers in IPL playing in indian squad. if they can be used in powerplay they can be used at death too. http://stats.espncricinfo.com/indian-premier-league-2012/engine/records/bowling/best_career_economy_rate.html?id=117;type=trophy
Dravid_TheWall Posted February 29, 2012 Posted February 29, 2012 You only make this thread now lol? This has been obvious since world cup. What do you expect when you have ZK on decline, Nehra and Munaf axed and Sree injured. Crappy seamers with no talent will get tonked in those critical moments.
MCcricket Posted February 29, 2012 Posted February 29, 2012 I have a feeling that Abu Nechim will be the right person for death bowling, have seen him bowl, yorkers and due to his slingy action and pace will be a good ODI bowler, also had a lot of success in IPL, SELECTORS ARE DUMB ASSES.Now we have three bowlers who are medium pacers only can bowl ok in first spell and a Dinda who is making a comeback lol,m Cheeka and selectors are re!@#$ds
Ultimate_Game Posted February 29, 2012 Author Posted February 29, 2012 I don't follow domestic matches all that much but surely there has to be a guy who has good control and can bowl yorkers. Get him into the team as the death overs specialist. There's no way we will be able to retain the WC if we don't find a couple of good death bowlers. SA has Steyn and Morkel along with Tsotsobe Eng has Dernbach and Broad with Finn, Bresnan and Tremlett who could also do a decent job Aus has plenty of fast men who can do the job Pak has Gul, at least for the death overs. Even Ajmal is pretty tough to get away SL has Malings NZ has Southee We are the only major team who doesn't have even one decent death bowler who can be relied upon to do the job away from the subcontinent.
MCcricket Posted February 29, 2012 Posted February 29, 2012 Well we won't get anywhere with Dhobi at the helm , he will keep on giving the ball to Raina and Virat to bowl death overs and Umesh , Varun, other pacers will not be able to experience and learn the process.
Ultimate_Game Posted February 29, 2012 Author Posted February 29, 2012 Well we won't get anywhere with Dhobi at the helm ' date=' he will keep on giving the ball to Raina and Virat to bowl death overs and Umesh , Varun, other pacers will not be able to experience and learn the process.[/quote'] I agree. No matter how expensive Umesh has been, he has to be given the final overs as no matter what, it would be easier to hit Kohli & Raina than Umesh at the death.
MCcricket Posted February 29, 2012 Posted February 29, 2012 I wish we had Dada as captain currently , as we have talent to build a genuine pace brigade, under Dhoni these bowlers will suffer. For the first time we have 3 bowlers who can bowl 150 plus, and 6 to 7 bowlers who can bowl 145 k.

Zak has been pretty good at death overs,But we have get aaron and umesh who both can bowl yorkers more chance at death over bowling.
Ultimate_Game Posted March 1, 2012 Author Posted March 1, 2012 Zak has been pretty good at death overs' date='But we have get aaron and umesh who both can bowl yorkers more chance at death over bowling.[/quote'] No not really. Zak has been good around 35-40 year mark when the ball starts to swing but at the death he gets carted all around the park just like he was in the WC final.

No no thats very harsh, he has won many matches at the death overs ,He has been go to bowler for india many times,Most recent which comes to memory was world cup match against ENG,SA,Aus,Pak http://www.espncricinfo.com/icc_cricket_worldcup2011/engine/match/433568.html?bowler=7678;innings=2;view=commentary http://www.espncricinfo.com/icc_cricket_worldcup2011/engine/match/433599.html http://www.espncricinfo.com/icc_cricket_worldcup2011/engine/match/433601.html?bowler=7678;innings=1;view=commentary http://www.espncricinfo.com/icc_cricket_worldcup2011/engine/match/433605.html?bowler=7678;innings=2;view=commentary

Zak's 2nd spell around the point when the new ball was due used to be great but right at the death he was expensive more often than not.

You are going to be carted around on flat pitches and that was one over ,But he was exceptional in the death overs in the tournament. You see if a bowler can vary his pace, bowl yorkers, read the game and give death over to those bowlers.

He was exceptional in his first spell and the 2nd one around when the new ball was due. The reverse swing he got with the old ball was amazing to watch. But over the years you will not consider Zak a death bowler specialist as he still leaks quite a few at the end.

Everybody leaks quite a few except guys like malinga who are freaks.Zaheer has won us many matches by bowling well in 49th and 50 th over and recently in world cup.he is as good as any bowler at death overs except guys like malinga.actually he made a name for himself in icc knockout in kenya due to his yorkers.

Zak is not the same anymore and what I've seen of him in the Aus tour he's at the end of his career. We will need to fina at least 2 death overs specialist soon no matter what as Zak won't be one of them.
