They account for more poor people than in the 26 poorest African nations combined. The new measure called the Multidimensional Poverty Index was developed and applied by the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative with UNDP support. The measure reveals the nature and extent of poverty at different levels: from household up to regional, national and international level. An analysis by its creators reveal that there are more than MPI poor people in 8 Indian states (421 million in Bihar, Chattisgarh, Jharkhand, MP, Orissa, Rajasthan, UP and West Bengal) than in the 26 poorest African countries combined (410 million).The MPI supplants the Human Poverty Index which had been included in the Annual Human Development Reports since 1997. The MPI assesses a range of critical factors or deprivations at the household level from education to health outcomes to assets and services. Taken together these factors provide a fuller portrait of acute poverty than simple income measures. Some alarming statistics: 1/3rd world poor is in India. It also has a higher proportion of its population living on less than $ 2 per day than even sub-Saharan Africa. 828 million people or 75.6% of the population is living below $2 a day.42% of the population is living below the new international poverty line. 33% of the global poor are Indians which equals to 14 billion people. Sub-Saharan Africa considered the world poorest region is better. :omg: Nagaland, Delhi and J&K have the least number of poor. 41.8% of the rural population survive with monthly per capita consumption expenditure of Rs 447. They spend only Rs 447 on essential necessities like food, fuel,light and clothing. According to the Planning Commission recent estimates poverty in India came down from 35.97 % in 1993-94 to 27.54% in 2004-05. Seriously, WTF is happening around here?

NeutralCat Posted March 4, 2012 Posted March 4, 2012 India will be a power but not for at least a 100 years, India needs to do a lot for it's population in general, India is also one of the most corrupt countries on Earth. Corruption happens in everyday life in India, and it's part of the culture, but when you try and talk to Indian people about they they don;t like hearing the truth. It's unfortunate, only by taking a good hard look at oneself can one improve and it's no different for India.

The word means you're able to project your influence all across the world, especially far off from your borders. Is that too hard to comprehend ?

Clarke Posted March 4, 2012 Posted March 4, 2012 Err, people rose out of poverty by the millions, the other side of the story is that millions are added every yr from the below poverty line families. Which does not mean a country cannot project power across the globe. Being neighbor of China & having territorial disputes by itself requires a strong military. Combine that with a growing economy and a jolly high projected GDP means being able to project influence is a by product, not an end in itself. The only ones i've seen disagree are those who do not believe in Indian economy's future growth rates(which is fair), lefties like Arundhati Roy who have a problem with everything Indian and Paki/Chink trolls who would rather have India dump its defense requirements and divert money to social programmes.

jairamesh Posted March 4, 2012 Posted March 4, 2012 This bad by any standards. But what is the best way to measure poverty? Taking an arbitrary $2 cut-off figure gives a distorted view. The $2 in India goes along way compared to many of these sub-Saharan countries (purchasing power parity) and many other countries worldwide. Probably the best indicator is Comparative Price Level (2005 levels): For example someone in India only needs $33 to get $100 worth of goods and services in relation to US. Whilst in most African countries it ranges from $45 to $60 in relation to $100 worth in the US. In the UK it is $118, Switzerland $148, etc. Hence you get 3 times more on average than someone in US, or 33% more on average than someone in Africa. But nevertheless this shouldn't distort the fact that majority of these people live on less than $2/day which doesn't buy much, hence the issues with malnourishment and high infant mortality rates. The greatest evil to poverty is inflation. If growth policies are intact, then incomes will rise, but uncheck inflation will destroy those living in poverty and check any progress. Oh, and if the central government can be only half as competent and getting education, health, and agriculture logistics in shape then it might help...but that's another issue.

India is soon becoming the third largest economy and that is not a lie, its a fact. So it does in fact translate to it being a super power with its economic strength As for poverty, India is home to 1/6th of the total world population, that much population in one country. If India had the US's economic clout, even then it would not be able to allieviate that much poverty, thats how big the task is. If India irradicates it powerty, more than 1/3rd of the world's poverty will be gone so yes, India can be a super-power despite all that. You have no idea of the numbers we are talking about when you talk about India's poor. There is no magic wand that can transform the condition of a billion people. It will take scores of years even with the most money in the world. Being a super-power and having people below poverty are not mutually exclusive things People have no comprehension of the enormity of the task involved when they talk about removing poverty from India. Imagine eradicating 1/3rd of world poverty and think about how big that task is! not going to happen over-night with any amount of resource or plan
