Justice and punishment IMO is something which gives the convict a chance to reform, keeps him under bar safe from society and ideally should act as a detrrant. Making the criminal suffer a lot is not justice, its revenge

The appeal process should take many years so the defendant has the right to be heard. Reform is not a right, if the crime is aggravated murder which is so extreme, then death is only option. People with known psychiatric conditions are obviously excluded from this.

Women in egalitarian societies don't process it in that manner - there is no concept of shame or honour associated with being raped. It is seen as a heinous, sex crime and all reactions, from personal to media to the law are tempered accordingly. It is only in regressive societies that the woman is burdened with feelings of shame for a crime in which she is the victim. As for the psychological trauma, that is common throughout for all victims, male and female, its effects are varied and depend lot on the mental makeup of the victim, the support of family and friends and professional guidance.
