Hands On With the 41-Megapixel Nokia PureView 808 Forty one megapixels. That's what it says on the back of the Nokia PureView 808, a new smartphone that can safely be called the highest resolution cameraphone ever. I got some time with it this morning and it's impressive, but perplexing. The 808 is a solid block of white plastic. It isn't slim, but c'mon guys, it's 41 megapixels. More importantly, it feels like a premium device, without loose or creaky bits. There's an HDMI port on top, a dedicated camera button, and of course that camera on the back: a relatively large lens with a big Xenon flash above it. The phone has a 4-inch, 640-by-360 touch screenËÕhat's a standard Symbian resolutionËÂs well as a 1.3GHz processor and 16GB of memory, plus a memory card slot. Pressing the camera button takes a picture within less than a second. So what can you do with 38 megapixels? You can zoom and crop. I took a shot of the Nokia booth and then zoomed in on a tiny little element, cropping it into what appeared to be a tidy image of 5 megapixels or so. That's the equivalent of a 3x lossless zoom at 5 megapixels, Nokia said. The camera has an f/2.4 aperture, which isn't as bright as HTC's new One X at f/2.0, but is still good for a cameraphone. You can digital-zoom within videos without losing resolution, too, capturing 1080p video at up to 4x zoom and 720p at 6x zoom. Audio recording is "CD quality," according to Nokia. You can also refine. Nokia CEO Stephen Elop said the 808 can "capture seven pixels and turn it into one perfect pixel," pretty much eliminating noise from images. "You can take great images in low light, too," Elop said. Now to the perplexing part. The PureView 808 runs Symbian, the awkward, decade-old OS that Nokia has said it's phasing out in favor of Windows Phone. Symbian is also not very popular among U.S. operators, making the PureView unlikely to come to a U.S. carrier. Nokia EVP Jo Harlow said the company has been working on the 808 for quite some time, implying that this device was in the works well before Nokia decided to move to Windows Phone. PureView technologies will come to "other devices" eventually, Harlow said. The PureView I was playing with had plenty of apps on board, and the phone's home screens were set up with attractive imaging and social networking widgets. But like most Americans nowadays, I just find Symbian's interface unfamiliar, and it feels like it takes too many taps to get at things. Screens flicked smoothly, but Symbian's interface simply lacks the easy flow common to more modern OSes. There's also some confusion around the size and resolution of the PureView 808's sensor. The phone says "41 Megapixels" on the back. Nokia EVP Jo Harlow said at its native resolution, it captures 38 megapixel images, that Nokia says are 7,152 by 5,368 resolution. When I looked at one of the images in the file manager, it was 5.2MB. Some Internet reports are saying the camera is "interpolated," which isn't what's really going on here. The default mode records 5-megapixel images by condensing seven pixels into one, but you can turn off that default and get 38-megapixel pictures if you feel you can handle the file size. The 5-megapixel mode offers dramatically reduced noise and improved image quality because it's oversampling, though, and that's the mode Nokia thinks most people will be using most often. In any case, this is absolutely amazing. The 41-megapixel toting smartphone certainly grabs headlines in the spec-chasing race, but in fact the real genius of PureView isnÃÕ in counting pixels but what Nokia can do with them. The 808 PureView may not be for everyone something Nokia readily concedes but the PureView tech it uses is coming, at least in part, to future Nokia phones. That could truly be a game-changer. PureView isnÃÕ just about NokiaÃÔ 41-megapixel sensor: itÃÔ a combination of three areas, the sensor, the Carl Zeiss optics and the companyÃÔ proprietary imaging algorithms. In the 808 PureView those algorithms get a processor of their own to use, NokiaÃÔ Head of Imaging Damien Dinning tells us, which is what allows it to crunch a billion pixels a second. Carl Zeiss lenses have been used in Nokia phones on several occasions, but here theyÃÓe tasked with a camera that, while it lacks an optical zoom, has to deliver super-crisp digital zooms. Meanwhile, the sensor itself although branded 41-megapixels, is really designed to produce incredible smaller shots. Although you can switch into a manual mode and output up to 38-megapixel frames, Nokia is expecting most users to stay within the 2-megapixel to 8-megapixel band. That allows the PureView technology to use all the extra pixels around eight per final pixel in a 5MP image to grab extra detail and increase overall accuracy. Bizarrely, despite all that extra detail, NokiaÃÔ final images are surprisingly small. A 5-megapixel frame is, on average, 1MB in size: thatÃÔ because Nokia uses a new system of compression that, it says, results in smaller shots by leaving out the details other cameras include but shouldnÃÕ. For instance, in JPEGs with black and white sections abutting, where other cameras would leave you with a column of grey tones between them, the 808 PureView will leave a crisp pixel-accurate line. That adds up to no lost detail but no extraneous murk either, hence the smaller file sizes. Video, too, is smaller, and itÃÔ arguably low-light detail in which PureView shows its hand. Nokia showed us a video shot with the 808 PureView at a concert, complete with bright on-stage lighting, dry ice and otherwise gloom, and the detail was legitimately astonishing. Rather than washing out the entire frame, the powerful stage lights were crisply edged, shining sharply through the mist, while other less powerful spots were equally visible. On-stage detail of the dancers was also clear. Dinning admits that the 41-megapixel branding is in part an attention-grab to give it a head-start in stores. According to the imaging chief, whether or not to brand the 808 PureView with its pixel count has been a hotly discussed topic at Nokia, with the final decision being that if the company didnÃÕ mention it, others still would. NokiaÃÔ N8 saw a fair number of sales from photography-obsessed cellphone shoppers voicing that interest to salespeople and being directed to the 12-megapixel Symbian device as it was ÅÕhe best smartphone camera experience apparently, and Nokia hopes to catch a few more with a similar method. Future devices will see some form of PureView technology integrated. As Dinning told us, Nokia didnÃÕ spend five years working on the system to only use it in a single device. Still, a 41-megapixel Windows Phone probably isnÃÕ on the cards, at least not yet. What weÃÓe likely to see are the algorithms and the idea of cropping a high-resolution slice of an even larger image carried over into other phones, with fewer megapixels but also a generally smaller phone overall. 41 megapixels? :ohmy: Won't be surprising if we see DSLR quality in smartphones due to nanotechnology.
Yeah Nokia PureView it is very close to DSLR quality. It has pixel binding technology, 8 pixels bind in 1 pixel to make zooming more effective. It is actually a 5, 8, and 38 MP camera but at 5 MP, we get a resolution of 41 MP due to pixel binding. This helps in post processing and zooming.
