Don't you guys think TOO much money is pumped into cricket? If we use that money in the development of other sports too, I can see India at par with China in this field. :dontknow:

It's the government's job to inject money into other sports to promote growth, if I recall Indian government spends US$10million annually, compare that to the Australian government which spent nearly US$1billion in the last 4 years across all sports. PS: I rather the Indian government don't go through the Chinese route of setting up factories to produce athletes through forced training, torture, loneliness, etc. It will only create dud athletes.

Recently the interest in football has been increasing so suddenly we've seen a little more money in the game. Similarly in F1, we've got Sahara Force India and now there's the Indian GP so the interest in motor racing is increasing and now we will see more money in motor sport.

Who exactly is pumping money into cricket that could be routed into other sports ?

Simple example, I coach badminton to teenagers in the US. the biggest badminton facilities in the US are in Boston, NY and Cali with ex world champion coaches etc, I know personally of 2-3 kids who quit college and move to Boston or NY to train full time, but in this country they can afford to because even if they dont make it (in all likelihood they wont, they are good but not international good), they can have some kind of work that will give them a middle class living. Even if they come back to college it is not uncommon to see 30 year olds doing bachelors here. This is almost impossible in India, where there are no safety nets and the culture and society (you cant enroll in a decent university beyond a certain age, dont know if this still is true), is geared towards safer, less risk taking mentality. If you compare this to African nations, it is different because in most of the underdeveloped countries Sports is almost the only way to break out of poverty, so people there take that chance.

People who are genuinely concerned are doing their bit - e.g. http://www.olympicgoldquest.in/ it will take at least couple of decades (my guesstimate) to start seeing significant results - given that our democracy does not crash, and/or there are no big wars.

Cricket is technically the only sport we play and we fail to be the best for long periods of time. Look at our cricket players, they're fat, unfit and far from physically athletic. India is not spending loads of money on cricket but cricket as a sport generates a lot of revenue on it's own. In simple words, cricket makes it's own money and profit.
