DomainK Posted April 22, 2012 Posted April 22, 2012 It's a simple matter of demand and supply. People watch cricket more than other sports, so cricket gets most of the money. If people start watching other sports, the money will also start flowing accordingly. But then we need some heroes in other sports, like Gavaskar and Kapil Dev contributed towards the popularity of Cricket. Paes, Bhupati and Sania Mirza made some difference to Tennis. A lot of us are interested in chess because of the great Vishwanathan Anand. If we had a Dhyanchand playing for us today, I bet a lot of attention would be on Hockey as well.

Potential itself won't take you far ,unless there are companies or people to sponsor players .Most of the time athletes or sportsperson leave because of lack of infrastructure and money trouble .You cannot expect people to carry on with it ,when they are worried about DO waqt ki roti .

They saw an opportunity in the early 90s to market cricket and changed themselves accordingly. With other sports, even though there is a willingness to invest money, the administration is so pathetic, the sponsors just turn away. With a good administration, the Hockey Federation could have turned the face of the game in the country when Sahara started pumping money and ESPN came on board to launch PHL in the early 2000s. But their sheer incompetence and lack of professionalism saw the sponsors keeping themselves limited to national side. Same with Atheletics or Football. The football federation launched the national league with a good amount of money in late 90s, but it has failed to take off and there have been absolutely no attempts made to somehow improve the league, attendance etc. Olympics sports in the country are run by a bunch of goons and highly corrupt people who have been clinging onto their position for decades without producing any results. Why would a sponsor even approach such morons when he knows that 75% of the money will be pocketed by these corrupt officials. The day other sports federations start showing at least some improvement in the way they run their sports, we will see money flowing into these sports too.

Needforspeed Posted April 23, 2012 Posted April 23, 2012 None of the business houses are here to promote sports. They will put their money if they get some commercial returns on their investments. At present cricket is the best bet. If some other sport becomes popular, they will simply move there. I remember my father telling me that at one time hockey was as popular as cricket in India. That was the time, when our hockey team was winning everything. Popularity follows success. This is more true ot team sports. Individual sports(Chess, golf, Tennis etc) lack the mass following that team sports generally gives.

I would argue they are ahead in sports which require skills. Sports like football and rugby which require muscular ability, aren't dominated by Asians.

Especially of those peepz from the last 2-3 generations. they have really weird catchy first names- like Jojo, Jijo, Tijo, Libi, Lini, Lijo, Shine, Shiny, Blessy etc. Now these names aren't exactly Biblical nor are they your typical Malayali first names. Why do these people have such names? What started this trend? If you notice, its more prominent among those of people of our generation (mid 20s now). This wasn't the case, say 60 years ago. Suddenly, a lot of Malayalis, Christians mainly, have started using random bisyllabic words as names. What gives?
