He is slightly selfish but you have to say his presence in the team is a benefit, he took a stupid single of the first bowl of the final over last night and never faced another ball. He should bat higher up where he can make a difference.

You can be selfish, and your team can either loose or gain from it. Gavaskar was selfish but India gained a lot from it. WI benefitted much from Chanderpaul's selfishness and it is difficult tp imagine a WI side without Chanderpaul over the last decade.

Shiv has been playing like this for last 17 yrs so I won't much of this article..he is slow and doesn't change his style (expect for a brief period of few yrs). The problem with him,VVS,RD was they consume too many balls with painful strike rate.

The current generation exposed to a lot of T20 cannot appreciate the skills of survival. They were also a treat to watch - some times it does get irritating when the team wants quick runs. We just needed one more Dravid like display in England and the series results would have been different. The slam-bang style does not work in seaming conditions when good bowlers are operating, you need to be patient to collect your runs or fold the way Indians did last year.

What we don't want is to start patronising West Indies cricket. Yes, there is some spirit there and, of late, a decent Australia side were given a good run. But the raw truth is that West Indies are way below an acceptable standard and the fault lies with a few cricketers and a stubborn board. If the situation is allowed to drift, it will continue to infect the game at all levels back at home. Young cricketers need inspiration from heroes. They need to rejoice in stirring deeds that draw them to watch and play the game of their own volition. The side on the field at Lord's has men to admire but not players to revere. It is time to bring them in from the cold.

But author got a point. I have been seeing this for years. He just doesn't farm the strike well. Also he doesn't go for quick runs even with no.11 batsman.

He should bat at 3 or 4 but he does not because he is comfortable batting at 5.

On the 2009 tour of England for the Lord's test, WI 11 read- Gayle, Smith, Sarwan, Chanders, Nash, Simmons, Ramdin, Taylor, Benn, Baker, Edwards..yet they were thrashed by 10 wickets barely avoiding an innings defeat. With Sammy in the side and leading his side well, Bravo doesn't have a place. Andre Russel is not yet ready for test cricket, Sarwan has lost his form. Not sure how much of a difference Narine would have made either in those bitterly cold conditions with hardly any turn. Gayle's addition may help WI but not sure by how much. For all we know it may disrupt the dressing room environment completely and could see them going back to those regular thrashings again.

I think it's putting your best team on the park which matters. Sometime things click and sometimes they don't. Fight will only help till a point after that it is skill which matters. You will see this WI team just like the WI teams before the 1970s - good fight, great entertainers and that's it. They will fail to consistently beat top teams as they lack some skill which a few players have. I agree that apart from Gayle and Sarwan none of the others are up for the Test level but Gayle and Sarwan could've been the difference between the fight and the win in the Lords test match. Moreover, the reason Gayle and Sarwan are neglected are not entirely cricket related. Considering, their form and fitness they are capable to walk into this WI line up. WI may still have not won but at least they gave themselves the best chance. Currently, they are trying to handicap themselves when they don't need to. As for your question on spin, Narine may not have played the Lords Test match but he should have been on the 16 roster.
