Ultimate_Game Posted May 20, 2012 Posted May 20, 2012 B'lore had one of the best batting lineup in this edition of IPL with batsmen like Gayle, AB De Villiers, Dilshan, Kohli etc. in the team but they couldn't even get to the knockouts, whereas all the teams with a decent bowling attack (Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkatta) topped the table. Proves once again that in any format bowling wins you tournaments. An old saying in some of the games (especially footie, American football) is "Offense wins you games whereas Defense wins you championships". In cricket this translates to "Batting wins you games while Bowling wins you championships". Every good to great team had a good bowling attack whereas a good batting lineup looks good on paper but will seldom win anything. That's why a team with the likes of Malinga, Naraine, Morkel will most often than not trump a team with the likes of Gayle, ABDV, Sehwag etc.
bulbul Posted May 20, 2012 Posted May 20, 2012 Dear saarr...2 of the top bowlers in world cricket gave 17+ runs in their last overs of match only if Gayle didnt lost his patience [he was patient in begining every match this season] match should ahve eneded before 15th over
vvvslaxman Posted May 20, 2012 Posted May 20, 2012 It is not like DC had great bowling line up. You should title it as "more mentally stronger team". You think CSK had great bowling unit last 2 seasons . Albie Morkel is a joke of a bowler to open any bowling attack. Couple of rookie spinners. That's it they got. Same way DC in 2009 didn't have great bowling attack either. They played as a team.

And the reason for that is simple - bowlers are in the game a lot more than a batsman can. A batsman may get out first ball whereas a bowler will bowl his full quota of overs no matter what.

They only had Steyn and then nobody else.
saneindian Posted May 20, 2012 Posted May 20, 2012 Chasing 136..you would think its the batting which failed here, the bowling unit did its job.
vvvslaxman Posted May 20, 2012 Posted May 20, 2012 DC did not have a great bowling lineup. They failed to defend 170+ no. of times. They only had Steyn and then nobody else. yes.. but in this current match.. i am saying. At the end of the day you have to raise the game at the right moment. Today it was pure choke job. Actually RCB restricted them to a below par total. Also in T20.. even if you have 3 good bowlers, they can target one bowler and compensate it. RCB got Murali but they needed Gayle more than him. KKR got Naraine, They also needed Gauti. Basically they have to complement each other. One without the other is useless.
Number Posted May 20, 2012 Posted May 20, 2012 Chasing 136..you would think its the batting which failed here' date=' the bowling unit did its job.[/quote'] Couldn't defend 180 and 206. Their batters chased 180+ at times. Yes, their batting choked today. But blame goes to their bowling if you analyze whole season. Even RCB fans will agree.

Unable to manage his bowling resources tossing 19th over to a part timer against a destructive batsman. Every single team has been taken to cleaners at some point.
youngindia Posted May 20, 2012 Posted May 20, 2012 Dear saarr...2 of the top bowlers in world cricket gave 17+ runs in their last overs of match what a typical way to miss the forest for the woods a strong attack will often help you "overperform".a batsman needs 70/100+ and sverral minutes to make his weight count.a strong bowler requires three balls. a steyn or morkel may not be as devastating as in test cricket. but a top notch penetrative attack will go a long way in shutting opposition down over a period of time. its about rules and exceptions when you look at the big picture
Sehwag1830 Posted May 20, 2012 Posted May 20, 2012 Gayle finally got a taste of facing quality quicks. As i said , his ego got the better of him. He should have stuck to what he was doing earlier.Seeing off good bowlers and thrashing Indian trundlers.

As I already mentioned in my OP "batting wins games and bowling championships". Batting does win you games as they did RCB but seldom championships. Why do you think India historically has been poor at intl level given the resources/support they had? It's coz they never had a decent bowling attack. Over the last 10-15 years they had a power-packed batting lineup with 3 of the best batsmen playing at the same time. I am sure if India had 3 of the best bowlers of all time playing at the same time India would have achieved a lot more.
JourneyMan Posted May 20, 2012 Posted May 20, 2012 Fully agree with the bowling thing, and this is why I say that 3 of the 4 foreign players should be top class bowlers. India has enough batsmen but NO match-winning bowlers.

Same way DC in 2009 didn't have great bowling attack either. They played as a team. it only meant other teams also sucked as a bowling unit. u r forgetting bolly and ashwin have played crucial roles in many matches. bolly ,ashwin and murali were top wicket getters whenevr csk won.

Unable to manage his bowling resources tossing 19th over to a part timer against a destructive batsman. Every single team has been taken to cleaners at some point. Part of blame goes to vettori but VK 4 overs 52 runs , R Bhatkal 2 overs 36 runs. That's not good enough for players who are there just to bowl. Bowling was equally poor too.

I will never agree CSK has a great bowling line up. Infact i would rank 6th or 7th in terms of bowling quality. Other teams had far supeior bowlers. But they managed to hide their weaknesses with extraordinary fielding and good batting. Basically batsmen and bowlers have to complement each other. Above all you have to learn to play as a team not a bunch of individuals.
Ultimate_Game Posted May 20, 2012 Author Posted May 20, 2012 Fully agree with the bowling thing' date=' and this is why I say that 3 of the 4 foreign players should be top class bowlers. India has enough batsmen but NO match-winning bowlers.[/quote'] Agreed 100%. If I could pick a team I would love to have likes of Malinga, Naraine, Morkel in my team over 3 batting superstars. Just imagine if 12 of the 20 overs are taken care of. In that case even an average batting unit will be more than enough to win you games. That's why I like Delhi - they went with talented Indian pacers in Umesh & Aaron along with an all-rounder in Irfan.
vvvslaxman Posted May 20, 2012 Posted May 20, 2012 i am telling in very simple words if they saved atleast 10/15 runs we shouldnt have discussed with this thread.. its all hindsight..we lost by 9 runs...not like 25/30 runs [i feel sad beause its only 9 runs 30/40 runs shouldnt have felt bad] They also gave you atleast 6 over throws :hmmm: 136 was chasable. Just look at the shots they got out to. That is where the problem lies. ABDV, Kohli, Tiwary, Gayle, Dilshan all irresponsible shots.
Zelig Posted May 20, 2012 Posted May 20, 2012 only if Gayle didnt lost his patience [he was patient in begining every match this season] match should ahve eneded before 15th over Gayle finally got a taste of facing quality quicks. As i said ' date=' his ego got the better of him. They should have chased 136 without him against an attack that has only Steyn as its world class bowler. On the topic, bowling is as important as batting in T20s. Case in point - Trinidad & Tobago.
