And most important, it raises questions on the ability of Narendra Modi keep the flock together and respect the sentiments and importance of senior leaders with a mass base. The related issue is the oft repeated claim that Modi is authoritarian and doesn't tolerate differences and dissent. LK Advani. AFP It is early to deliver any verdict on Modi's leadership style, but ironically, Advani's current plight is reminiscent of his own track record as a leader; his ability and willingness to accept differences and dissent and his respect for senior leaders with a mass base. And while we can sympathize with Advani for his perceived humiliation, a look at his own history reveals that his own track record on this score has been abysmal. Both when he was one part of the Advani-Vajpayee duo who controlled the party till 2004 and when he was the undisputed leader between 2004 and 2012, Advani succeeded in alienating, humiliating and sidelining lots of senior BJP leaders. Let's start with Kalyan Singh, former chief minister of Uttar Pradesh. Even greenhorn analysts of politics in Uttar Pradesh know that the circumstances that forced Kalyan Singh to leave the BJP is one reason why the party lost the plot in UP to regional chieftains like Mulayam Yadav and Mayawati since the late 1990s. Kalyan Singh has rejoined the BJP, but the magic is gone and the Uttar Pradesh BJP still doesn't have a credible leadership with a grassroots base. Something similar happened with the Madan Lal Khurana who was chief minister of Delhi. The manner in which the BJP-controlled by Advani humiliated and sidelined this grassroots leader has destroyed many BJP bastions in Delhi. It is yet to recover and could well lose the future assembly elections to Arvind Kejriwal. After the shock of 2004, when the NDA lost the Lok Sabha elections, former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee faded into the sunset. Advani was the unquestioned and undisputed Boss of the BJP. And how did he tackle senior leaders with a mass base? The firebrand leader Uma Bharati who decimated Congress heavyweight Digvijaya Singh and became the chief minister of Madhya Pradesh was humiliated and hounded out of the party. It is BJP's good fortune that it found an able replacement in Shivraj Singh Chouhan who has managed to keep the BJP support base in tact in the state. The party has not been as lucky in Jharkhand. Babulal Marandi was the BJP chief minister of the state and immensely popular because of his clean image. And yet, this grassroots leaders was compelled to leave the BJP and form his own party, the JVM, that has considerably eroded the BJP vote bank in Jharkhand. Two more shockers were awaiting in the run up to the 2009 Lok Sabha elections and its aftermath. In 2008, Advani did nothing to quell or even manage a revolt against the Rajasthan chief minister Vasundhara Raje Scindia. The result: the BJP narrowly lost the assembly elections to the Congress. So divided was the Rajasthan BJP after that narrow loss that the Congress won 21 out of 25 seats in Rajasthan in the 2009 Lok Sabha elections. There was enormous pressure on Scindia to relinquish her role as the main Opposition leader in Rajasthan. It is no secret that there was a time when Scindia was contemplating a separation from the BJP. Vasundhara bounced back into contention only in 2013 when Advani had started reluctantly making way for Modi. Something similar happened in Uttarakhand where Major General BC Khanduri, like Babulal Marandi in Jharkhand, was immensely popular because of his clean image and reputation as an efficient administrator. Yet, the infighting within the state unit of BJP and the spectacular failure of Advani to manage it helped the Congress win all 5 Lok Sabha seats of Uttarakhand in the 2009 elections. How did Advani and his team react? They sacked Khanduri as the CM. A frustrated and humiliated Khanduri was contemplating a separation from BJP until a few months before the 2012 assembly elections when a desperate BJP wooed him back into the fold. The BJP still lost. Worse, Khanduri lost his own seat. Interestingly, the difference between the BJP and the Congress tally then was just one seat! And then there is BS Yeddyurappa in Karnataka. He toiled for more than four decades to build the BJP as a formidable force in the southern state. And his efforts were finally rewarded when he became chief minister in 2008. Problems cropped up soon when Yeddyurappa faced serious allegations of corruption. He was forced to resign as chief minister as a result. Some BJP leaders claim the high moral ground over the manner in which the party compelled an old BJP hand like Yeddyurappa to quit because he faced corruption charges. But really that is nonsense because the party has never hesitated to welcome and retain " tainted" leaders. When a bitter Yeddyurappa was forced to leave the BJP, he singled out Advani as the man behind his betrayal. While the media may be portraying Advani as the aging patriarch being humiliated by the new dispensation, he is surely reaping the bitter harvest of what he himself has sowed.

The good thing about AAP is, I hope there some success with them as they will mainly split the Congess votes :giggle:. Somewhere like Karnataka AAP can prove very useful for BJP.

As a journalist, this was a great opportunity to put Modi in the dock and question him on his role in the 2002 riots. Like most of the journalists and secular liberals, I held Modi responsible for the killings that followed the Godhra train burning. Just a week earlier on a TV discussion, I was calling him a Fascist and an unrepentant killer. In fact, it was a great surprise for me that he had agreed to grant an interview to me. Narendra Modi, not fake secularism will save Indian Muslims The way Modi replied to all my questions and allegations calmly was a bit surprising for me. He was logical, factual and rational in reply to most of my queries. I won’t go into the details of the interview as my intention is not to analyse it but to move beyond it. After this interview, I started questioning my own inferences about the Gujarat riots and Modi. I realised that they were mostly based on a biased and predetermined image of an RSS Pracharak. As a liberal we looked on all of them as communal, bigoted, narrow minded, anti-minority Devils. That’s what we had been conditioned to believe for last many decades. No proof was required to declare them guilty of any crime. Deoband cleric endorses Modi, says Muslims want change I started asking myself ‘Was it the only riot where justice had been denied to the minorities? Was this riot different from Mumbai, Bhagalpur or Meerut riot?’ Argument was that in Gujarat – the Government and administration allowed the rioters to perpetuate all sorts of atrocities on the Muslims. Comparing this to 1987 Meerut Hashimpura killings, which I had covered extensively, I realised that those were cold blooded murders of 70 young boys , who were picked from their houses and shot dead without any provocation by the PAC on Ganga canal near Hapur. Not a single police officer or constable was indicted or punished. In Mumbai 1993 riots, killings were done by police officers in Bhindi Bazar at Minara Masjid, according to the Justice Krishna Commission Report, but no one was ever punished for it. I realised that since 1947 in thousands of communal flare-ups under the Congress regimes there never was any accountability or justice for the victims. Recent Muzaffarnagar riots proved to be the last straw on ‘Secular’ camel’s back.I realised that we were using double standards for judging the 2002 riots in Gujarat and riots in other parts of the country under so called secular regimes. Muslims should not fear Narendra Modi-led BJP, says Shahid Siddiqui In Gujarat, the justice system and investigative agencies had done their best to put Modi in the dock and helped in bringing dozens of police officers and political activists including Ministers to book, which they had failed to do in all the riots including the 1984 anti-Sikh pogrom. However, they had failed to build a credible case against the Gujarat Chief Minister. He had virtually been given a clean chit by all the courts, including the Supreme Court of India. I have been asking this question from myself for quite some time, how long are Indian Muslims going to be the slaves of this ‘Electoral Secularism’, the sole purpose of which is to create fear in the minds of the Muslims, push them into a social, cultural, political and economic ghetto to get their votes for the so called ‘Secular Parties’. Elections are all about options but for Muslims these options are closed in the name of saving them from communal devils. Those who have pushed them into worst possible deprivation and backwardness, claim to be their only saviours and therefore only claimants of their votes. Any Muslim who dares to question these premises is dubbed as an agent of the communalists who has sold his conscience to the Fascist Satan. Everyone is browbeaten into the corner of ‘Electoral Secularism.’ Modi and Muslims: Listen to Shahid Siddiqui speak on Muslims’aspirations Muslim voter is perceived to be a herd which votes ‘tactically’ without using his or her brain, for a party which can defeat ‘BJP’ and provide protection to them in return for their votes. Lalu Prasad Yadav, Mulayam Singh Yadav, Mamata Banerjee, HD Devegowda, Nitish Kumar and Sonia Gandhi all have played this game, shamelessly. When it suits them ‘BJP’ is secular and when it suits their political interests it is communal. Many among Muslims have been raising these uncomfortable questions but either because of fear or because of political expediency there are very few who make their views public. I think the time has come when there should be an honest debate on the premises on which we declare a party or a leader saviour or a threat to the minorities, a friend or an enemy? Time when Muslims stop supporting or opposing any party or leader blindly, unquestioningly. Time when Muslims look at BJP or Narendra Modi with an open mind and see if it is time to move beyond 2002 riots as the nation and specially Muslims have moved beyond Babri Masjid, Mumbai, Bhagalpur, Meerut Muzaffarnagar riots, time to make a new beginning. UP Muslims want Modi as next Prime Minister It is also the moment for BJP leadership specially Mr Modi to understand that governance is not only about forming a government and becoming the P.M; it is also about carrying different groups and communities that make a nation, with you. India is not a banana republic which may be ruled by a tin pot dictator, India is emerging as the leading nation of the world which requires a statesman at the helm who carries not only the country, but the moral authority to protect its interests globally. Why should the party put up with someone who's well post retirement age at 86? Yes he has done great things for the party - But that doesn't mean all his antics be put up with forever , is it?
