Sachin=GOD Posted June 20, 2012 Posted June 20, 2012 I guess, with my limited civics memory, he is just a face for signing off important documents/decisions. e.g. on paper, he is supreme commander of armed forces, and can declare war/conclude-peace. But such things are hardly individual decisions, definitely not in India. And that applies to PM also - he may look more powerful than President - but I don't think he can take any decision on his own. If the PM really wants then he/she can take decisions on his own.
1983-2011 Posted June 20, 2012 Posted June 20, 2012 hmm, if you read in most cases President cannot act alone. He needs opinion and he has follow rule book. I am wondering, we borrowed everything from British..Does British have President?? LOL' date=' do they have states?? [b']they are small country..LOL thats why they dont have a president:winky:
yoda Posted June 20, 2012 Posted June 20, 2012 It's a honorary post. You get to live in Rashtrapati Bhavan, get to represent India as a head of state, and will be forever etched in history as a person to have held an esteemed post, with or without power. Yes I will take it if offered. :winky:
Sachin=GOD Posted June 20, 2012 Posted June 20, 2012 The Prez may or may not have any powers but I am certain about one thing - Pranab Mukherjee the Rubber Stamp will have more power than MMS the Rubber Stamp :giggle:
Mariyam Posted June 20, 2012 Posted June 20, 2012 I think the President also gets the choose the menu at the Rashtrapati Bhavan
Lurker Posted June 20, 2012 Posted June 20, 2012 LOL. Does it matter if very best is president? As far as I can see' date= they cannot do anything. Even Kalam with all his vision etc. could not achieve much. Sure they can. They are the final authority on signing most bills into law. Remember they can send back anything Parliament passes atleast once (which causes huge embarassment to the ruling party). President is the stable authority in democratic process where often, specially these days of coalition Government, one can expect the Govt to come crashing down. You really do not want the nation to have nobody at the helm because the Govt was voted down/out, do you? What if there was a national emergency, say war during such a time. Incidentally President needs to sign declaration of war as well. Your larger point is certainly true that in truth it is the PM and council of Ministers who run the country, but thats not to say President doesnt have a role. Now just because Narendra Modi will never be the President.....:--D
