kabira Posted June 20, 2012 Posted June 20, 2012 I mean its just a dummy post...what can president accomplish?? they are there to just sign..LOL I don't understand why you would want to become President...you can hardly help in changing laws or constitution.
DomainK Posted June 20, 2012 Posted June 20, 2012 Okay so can't change law/constitution = worthless position. Interesting theory.
kabira Posted June 20, 2012 Author Posted June 20, 2012 well what can President do? they can only grant mercy to criminals LOL.. What I am trying to say, do we really need a President??
Crookbond Posted June 20, 2012 Posted June 20, 2012 well what can President do? they can only grant mercy to criminals LOL.. What I am trying to say, do we really need a President?? http://books.google.com.sg/books?id=Ut3cutZ2GM4C&pg=PA147&redir_esc=y#v=onepage&q&f=false
kabira Posted June 20, 2012 Author Posted June 20, 2012 hmm, if you read in most cases President cannot act alone. He needs opinion and he has follow rule book. I am wondering, we borrowed everything from British..Does British have President??
Crookbond Posted June 20, 2012 Posted June 20, 2012 hmm, if you read in most cases President cannot act alone. He needs opinion and he has follow rule book. I am wondering, we borrowed everything from British..Does British have President?? NO - AFAIK.
kabira Posted June 20, 2012 Author Posted June 20, 2012 They have Queen or back in days Kings and Queen had more power... I don't knwo where we got this President/Governor concept??
chanakya Posted June 20, 2012 Posted June 20, 2012 because the next election is most likely to be a hung parliament. So whoever gets to put up the president has a slight more chance of being called to form the government and use that to buy seats.... and they do not want a sharp president who will actually do some work, like send back bills for revision if he does not like it, write his own speech, not follow the parliament line ... Like Kalam did :D
asterix Posted June 20, 2012 Posted June 20, 2012 President plays an important part in electing a govt. having own partyman as president helps any party which desperately wants to stick to power...
Lurker Posted June 20, 2012 Posted June 20, 2012 I mean its just a dummy post...what can president accomplish?? they are there to just sign..LOL I don't understand why you would want to become President...you can hardly help in changing laws or constitution. That's being cynical. Historically speaking President of India has often been one of the very best we have to offer and any country would be proud of having somebody like Radhakrishnan, Rajinder Prasad or Abdul Kalaam at the top. Giani Zail Singh and Pratibha Patil are notable exception of course. And it increasingly appears that the next President would join them too...:((
The Outsider Posted June 20, 2012 Posted June 20, 2012 It's an important diplomatic and foreign affairs post if utilized correctly.

As far as I can see, they cannot do anything. Even Kalam with all his vision etc. could not achieve much.
punjabi_khota Posted June 20, 2012 Posted June 20, 2012 President's job is to visit random countries that PM is too busy to go, and host dignitaries from random countries PM is too busy to host. Baaki 26 jaunary ki parade, etc.
Sachin=GOD Posted June 20, 2012 Posted June 20, 2012 Why being Prez is a big deal ? They get to live in the Rashtrapati Bhawan for 5 years
1983-2011 Posted June 20, 2012 Posted June 20, 2012 hmm, if you read in most cases President cannot act alone. He needs opinion and he has follow rule book. I am wondering, we borrowed everything from British..Does British have President?? does british have chief ministers??
akshayxyz Posted June 20, 2012 Posted June 20, 2012 I guess, with my limited civics memory, he is just a face for signing off important documents/decisions. e.g. on paper, he is supreme commander of armed forces, and can declare war/conclude-peace. But such things are hardly individual decisions, definitely not in India. And that applies to PM also - he may look more powerful than President - but I don't think he can take any decision on his own.
EnterTheVoid Posted June 20, 2012 Posted June 20, 2012 The Indian president is in office, just not in power :hatsoff:
kabira Posted June 20, 2012 Author Posted June 20, 2012 does british have chief ministers?? LOL, do they have states?? they are small country..LOL
Clarke Posted June 20, 2012 Posted June 20, 2012 I don't understand why you would want to become President Mate, you heard of the word 'legacy' ? Lots of powerful folks have that as their #1 priority. Being leader of Lok Sabha is one thing, President of the Republic of India is quite another.
